@omar Those advanced lifter number are a little insane. My BW is around 221 with a height of 6"3 and there is no way I can possibly and natrually bench over 400, squat over 600 and deadlift over 700.

did you pull these numbers out your ass???? an intermediate lifter is someone who deadlifting 3.5 x bw?????? you realise that 4x bw are hitting world records…… 1.5 x bw for squat and 2x bw for dead is intermediate imo.omur likley weighs 220 pounds and can deadlift 600 and is on elite status (which is above advanced for natties… assuming he is natty which i feel he is) and that isnt even 3.5 x bw…. so …. is he confusing steroid powerlifters he trains with as goals fro natties?? Omur you on juice now?? You do train with juice heads.

It is completely irresponsible to assume that your viewers are even halfway to a 3x bodyweight squat. Your viewers are not "leaving the beginner phase" and they sure as shit aren't hitting double bodyweight bench presses. Literally no human ever has hit double bodyweight bench press coming out of their novice phase.

LMAO! These "strength standards" (beginner – intermediate – advanced) floating around the internet are nothing but retarded.

Is it possible that since you were training high volume for so long, low volume was simply a stimulus that your body wasn't used to, so you adapted that way and got stronger?

Reply
Ari Lehtiniemi November 15, 2017 - 9:06 pm

Deadlift! That's the king of exercises.. or at least strength and overall mass exercises.. I would do bench for hypertrophy only and squat ass-to-grass for explosive speed (athleticism) and long sets to burn fat.

Please verify: 20-60 "training" reps means reps between 65-85% of training max, that is, warm ups and back-offs do not count.
Also, programming bench. And if possible, address whether or not squats tire shoulders for the bench if performed on the same day.

I think it's more reasonable to base how advanced n the raw numbers, rather than bodyweight. The bw ratios are all over the place in terms of what people are capable of as well as the obvious structural limitations that show up in strength sports. Though it's understandable to want to put the context of body size into it, it's a lot simpler just to recognize that 200, 300, 400, and etc are really fucking heavy, and being able to lift them at any size still warrants some merit, especially given morphological factors. I just started training specifically for strength recently (2ish months) and i'm 145, '5,11" with a 100lb bench, and projected/estimated maxes of 146 on the squat, and 215 deadlift because my limbs are long and my torso is short which is great for deadlifts and shit for bench.

Beginner to intermediate transition at 1200 pound power lift total?? (Using the numbers you quoted, 315 bench, 405 squat, and 500 deadlift). For steroid users sure! Natural lifter to be at 1200 is going to be stronger than 95% of weight lifters. You have great content Omar, but it can be discouraging to throw out big numbers to folks entering into the sport. Remember you are hanging out with known steroid users and also some of the best in the sport. For an average guy to start lifting and to even build up to a 225lb press will take a couple years with a reasonable effort and structured plan. You are also freakishly strong for your size and weight. Most guys with your numbers are a decent amount thicker. You have genetics like Cailer Woolam. 🙂

omarlsuf, I enjoy your content of information, but age is very important as well… many of us who are older have to reduce volume and vary our training frequency…. I just wanted to mention that…keep up the good work…

Reply

So would you say starting strength is low volume for a beginner?

Reply
JA July 26, 2018 - 5:19 pm

strength and hypertrophy go hand in hand up to a certain points ie. strength training with high volume earlier in your career will mean more gains whilst strength specialising. at this advanced point, you absolute load is higher therefore you can't handle this load as much so volume decreases when training for strength, therefore hypertrophy decreases. therefore strength and hypertrophy cannot be maximised when mixed together, as absolute load of strength will reduce volume so hypertrophy isn't maximised in a strength program, and lots of volume will harm recovery so you can't maximise strength on a hypertrophy program. this is why you should focus on either pure strength and pure hypertrophy and then swap between the 2.

So if I was starting out as a PL right now I would need to do a 125kg bench, 187kg Squat and a 250kg DL. At 20+ yrs trg I would need a 250kg bench, a 375kg squat and a 437kg DL. Based on my current PRs I need to get down to 90kg bodyweight which is roughly what I was at 16 years old.
