by YouTube Team

In the early 1990’s Vince McMahon attempted to rival the IFBB and he created the WBF. But it failed miserably. This is the story.

There was some top guys that joined that federation. And at some off their best shape. Aaron Baker and Gary Strydom looked awesome that year.

Vince paid his bodybuilders probably a lot more than he was paying his wrestlers in the early 90's, unless that wrestler was the champion.

Vince keep failing because he tries to put a WWF twist on everything. Just let the sport be.

McMahon tried to market the WBF to the mainstream aiming it not towards the hardcore community but to women, children and the gay community and he contrived the personalities of his stars to target specific markets. It was allegedly the weiders who got the FBI to investigate not mcMahon but Dr. Mauro diPasquale who provided drugs to a host of pro athletes amongst them a lot of wrestlers. The WWF took a nosedive in popularity and Vince quickly scuttled the promotion. Sad because it gave everyone hope that bodybuilding could be saved. Weider sold his magazines and that was all she wrote. Bodybuilding as an accepted sport died in the early 90's.

Good video.
Bellagio is in Vegas. Not owned by trump. Maybe not even in existence when all this went down.

I'm not into bodybuilding, know almost nothing about it, but I have watched a lot of Nick's videos. They are outstanding. I do remember, as a WWF/E fan, the WBF when it was new, and I thought it was going to be big. Boy, was I wrong.

I don't get this claim that Gary Strydom didn't do well in the IFBB. He won the Night of Champions in 1988. He placed fifth at the '88 Olympia. He won multiple IFBB Grand Prix shows before he left for the WBF.

Its refreshing to see such passion about Bodybuilding as Nick displays. I myself love to work out and I'm also really interested in the world of professional Bodybuilding. Keep up the awesome work and I'll continue to support.

There's a bit more to the story here too…. one of the biggest issues Vince had was the fact that he gave these bodybuilders guaranteed contracts while at the time was only offering his wrestlers a base guarantee of 10 appearances for $150 per appearance ($1500). Guaranteed WWE contracts didn't come along til the early 2000's so he had tremendous backlash from the wrestlers.

The first one doesn't seem that bad actually. Its a very interesting thing to see pro wrestling style of promotion being applied to other sports.

The venue was the Taj Mahal. The Bellagio did not even exist at that date, it opened only in 1998

Also worth mentioning: At one point, Vince had signed Lou Ferigno to the WBF for his return to bodybuilding in 1992, but after they instituted the drug test policy, Lou bounced back to the IFBB.

I was at this first WBF event on the judge's panel with great bodybuilders like Dave Draper and Tom Platz. We had a blast! We were dressed to the nines and treated with kid gloves by Vince and his staff. This production was before it's time; it was awesome by all standards.

Remember reading at the time, another aside to this story is, along with his drug testing McMahon also tried to get the bodybuilders to compensate by implementing the higher fat, carb cycled 'anabolic diet' similar if not actually the one developed by Dr Mauro Di Pasquale. But obviously with most of them having no experience of this type of regime, most messed it up, adding further to the low condition of many athletes that year.
Interestingly Strydom's condition was hardly affected and so some speculated, being the WBF poster boy he was given a pass on any potential testing. Who knows….

Vince and the WBF should have just not cared about steroid use.. everyone knows, suspects, or accepts that professional bodybuilders use steroids, as it's just not naturally possible to get as large as some do, so the public expects this and isn't a surprise to them, so as a result Vince and the WBF should have just allowed it's use, but just advocate for responsible use (i.e. regular doctor check-ups, etc) and advocate against abuse/personal use without doctor's approval/oversight, or better yet just simply stay hands-off, say nothing, and not take any stance for or against it.. what happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors.

I wanted to go to the WBF show in 1991 in Atlantic City for my 6th birthday, but my parents couldn't afford it, so I went to a WWF House Show at MSG instead
