Víctor Martínez did not deserve the victory either, with that potbelly. Better Dexter, or Ronnie Coleman

Nick has a good speaking voice for these video's. Thanks for taking the time to make them.

Huge Dorian fan, but he didn't deserve to win all 6 Olympias I agree. '97 was the beginning of severe palumboism imo and it really shows. However, your video does just focus on a few moments that really focus on moments Yates is not being judged (waiting for crowning decision) and poses he is most weak at.
I was in the crowd at the '96 British Grand Prix where Dorian also won, and the crowd were not happy when he won that show either, Nasser again looked incredible. However, even in that show, when Yates and Nasser turned to the rear Dorian would win. Nasser at his best still had quite a poor rear double bicep (lat spread improved but still not on Yate's level. Add the fact that Side Tricep was always Dorians and it gets a little closer.

That's kinda what is judged and nothing else, you could argue it went like this;

Front Double Bicep; Nasser
Front Lat Spread; Yates (but its close)
Side Chest; Nasser (but its close, I don't think Nasser executes it to it's fullest vs Yates)
Rear Double Bicep; Yates
Rear Lat Spread; Yates
Side Tricep; Yates
Abdominal Thigh; Nasser (but its close, somehow Yates manages to pull a distended waist in and has superb thighs).

So it all gets a little close.

Relaxed round and its Nasser takes the front, Yates takes the side and rear (as he's thicker from the side and his back is better).

I can't help feeling Nasser was penalised for suspected Synthol use and (judges) were sending a message.

The problem with videos like this is we overly focus on how a guy looks at moments he's not being judged. We'd really need to see a lot more comparison shots from the judges eyes/view points. But overall I would agree, '97 is a very questionable win, and '94 he looked weird and bloated too often at times, but if you control the bloat during the poses then it never gets penalised enough.
Sometimes I think we need a 'how do they look between poses' round or an 'overall relaxed/transition round/score', because some BB's seem to look AWFUL with pregnant bellies etc yet when the time comes to hit the pose can control it (and thus never really penalised anywhere a score card could mark down), somehow we (the fans) aren't very accepting of that, because it makes the guy with the slim waist who has it controlled all the time seemingly having no upper hand in that advantage.

Personally I don't always blame the judges, I blame the judging system.

1971 – my thoughts –
BB competitions was at its lowest level. competition held in usa with 90% attendance by USA citizens but weider wanted this to be international, participated and viewed (read / heard as that time books and radios were in common use with TVs owned only by the wealthy) by people from many countries. making it international means quadrupling the profits.

Then the prize money, US$1000 (equivalent to about US$8000 in 2020 if adjusted for inflation). Compare that with US$400,000 as the prize money in 2020 given to top finisher in addition to car, advertisement contracts, photos, videos and what not, overall value being equal to half a mill.

Weider wanted all this to change. wanted Mr.O to be like the final, pinnacle competition of BB, after Mr.O, its retirement of that individual. For all this, he needed a face and body, an ambassador who could resonate across the globe. Olivia had the body, but not the face, i mean, he wasn't so charismatic, not an orator, top body builder but! . Then the skin color also comes into play here, with 60s, 70s being racist gen, black men were treated more like goods than human. Mandingo , these muscular big black men were called and were treated below par. white folks like arnold who spoke little english but spoke a lot had it. his hercules in NYC movie (1970) put him in the spot light. Weider used this, used his connections in political and hollywood circles, made Arnie as the one and projected him there for the world to see and follow, year after year. removed the Austrian tag, made him american, gave him the #1 spot in mr.O seeing he had fans already. All those fans + new ones made a beeline for tickets in 1972 through till 1975 justfying what Weider did in 1971 by disqualifying olivia who was certain to win over an amateur 22yo arnold who was big for his age but in front of the myth, black mass, oily , shining , glistening under the lights , arnie would have to had settled for 2nd spot like in 69. If you notice, the future years, 72, through to 80, they had more and more competitiors, cananda, UK, germany, barbados , every one participated.

1970s itself was also controversial as arnie got #1 and sergio#2 who was unhappy with the decision and came back stronger in 1971 but weider had other plans. Weider did compensate olivia for his hard work and thats why this didnt become a big issue like the other cuban issues which were happening in that 60s era, u know the JFK, cuban missle crisis , bay of pigs, doomsday clock, n-bomb ruski and all that.

Arnold’s chest and biceps blew everyone out of the water, even in 1980. Look at 15:18 arm comparison with Boyer Coe. That clown had the nerve to think he was even close to the terminator and boycott the next year. 😆

Even if Arnold wasn't at his best 1980 he still looked good in some pictures. At 12:07 he look really good compared to the others. Zane on the other hand looks amazingly thin in some relaxed photos.

Dorian Yates should have not won in 97. He should be ashamed. Dorian should have stepped up and said something. It’s not right to rob Nesser of this accomplishment

Jeremy Crowe April 27, 2020 - 9:39 am

Nesser was by far superior to Dorian and this is so wrong. I hoped the decision was booed. This should not even be allowed. It should be overthrown

The Olympia you had as 5th, in my opinion, is definitely the most controversial Olympia of all. To stop ALL competition for Arnold is a terrible violation of the ideas of fair play and competition. The favoritism shown towards Arnold and Franco when they, quite frankly, should not have even placed, forever stains for me the the validity of the Olympia.

So many of your fans get their panties in a stained wad because Hafthor wants to set a world record dead lift in his gym, even with tough judges, or malign Eddie Hall because of concessions made to help Eddie win–hearsay for me–but let these examples in this video pass, that it is kind of disheartening for me to follow bodybuilding at all.

Watch both posing routines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNtG-4K95JE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3qRpOOtMz4. I think that explains clearly why Yates won.

Just watching the video and noticed at the 7.22 minute mark talking about the disqualification for competing in the Mr Universe title, there is a picture of Arnold and Ben Weider standing under a 1971 Mr Universe poster with his trophy. WTF

Hey nick I caught the pick in your video and the title. I forgot what the term of the picture is in your video when you edit your video and put it on youtube. Well what I believe about the judging on mr olympia is that they dont really care to much on physique so much. The organization will decide on the winner by there social medial following. Its all about marketing and other people having more followers so they can make more money and in some sense I strongly believe that to be true. Based upon one of the people I used to follow on youtube he is a major player in the fitness community. I dont know him personally but. Out of respect I dont want to mention his name. I think that answer will solve your main question about this video
