Very interesting presentation! He was a Christian man also. I would like to see a picture or reproduction of the 6,000+ lift.

Great vid.but it should be mentioned that when Paul Anderson broke the record in Soviet Union the people there cheered like crazy. Good people trapped behind iron curtain.

Funny how nobody mentions that he was a devout Christian and ran a home for delinquent children.

PA had max genetics for lifting. First time he lifted weights he did 300lb squat x10. Also a fast sprinter in early days.

There Were A Lot Of Amazingly Strong Men That Did Some Awesome Power Lifting, But Not As Phenomenal As Paul Anderson!!!! "The Father Of Power Lifting" Is A Rightful Title To Give Him.A Lot Of His Extraordinary Power Lifts Are Not Being Recognized Like They Should. When You Say The Name Paul Anderson, You Will Indeed Have People Attention!!!! The Russians Still Speak Highly And Admirably Of Paul Anderson Not Only Because Of His Great Strength, But Also Because, He Was A Great Human Being Of Character!!!!

he had brights disease from the age of 4, it destroys his kidneys not steroids. if he'd had proper training then it's unimaginable what he could have done?

In Mike Brown's book 'Strength of Samson' (1973 edition, this may be edited out in later editions) he claimed Paul Anderson drank raw milk. I assumed it was true, and personally; I don't gain fat if I use raw milk, but I gain lots of fat if I drink skim milk. But, I asked on his website and they were kind enough to ask his widow. According to her, he just got regular milk at the grocery store; not raw. It's possible that he did when he was young and making major lifts or before that and she never discussed it. But, that's my Paul Anderson story.

I saw him at a church in Detroit as a kid. My Dad met him. His grip was so strong that when he shook hands I heard he had to keep a finger out to make his grip "weaker". He was squatting more as a 17 year old than anyone else in the world basically. His Olympic lifts of the clean and press while he was sick is an amazing feat. He didn't even attempt the first 2 lifts and broke the record on his last and only lift even after having lost 15 lbs due to illness!!!! Strongest genetic freak ever in my opinion. Imagine if he were around today WITH steroids!!!!! yikes. The 6,000 + lb lift was with a harness strapped around him and he stood on a platform and while the weight was below him and he would stand up with it. Could also run fast! Total animal.

Incredible leverage with that compact, tank-like frame. They called him "The Dixie Derrick" and it really fit.

As strong as paul was and all the amazing things he did, the most important was his relationship with jesus and the school and education he started for boys that had no way out . Pretty awesome paul!

Louis Cyr is thought to be the strongest man. Or 2nd compare to Paul Anderson. All of those lifts are raw to which makes him more badass.

I find it interesting that the strongest men of two eras both died from nephritis/kidney disease. Are the genetic factors of kidney disease & great strength attached? Is it possible that both men were using substances that exacerbated the effects of the, (thought to be), genetic disease?

Except for his back lift all of Paul's lifts have been beaten, by men much smaller than him. His best clean and jerk was 440-pounds and now there are 148-pound weightlifters lifting more, much more. Some of the smaller guys lifted four and five times their body weight. His most impressive feats were mostly done in the gym. People who witnessed Paul's 1,200-pound squat was several inches high and would have been red-lighted. To be fair, Paul was at his strongest after he turned pro and was not allowed to compete for the U.S weight-lifting team. Jon Cole challenged Paul to a six lift competition–the three Olympic lifts and the three powerlifts–but Paul refused. He also turned down a match between Doug Hepburn back in the early 50's but Paul refused again. Some of Paul's lifts were estimations; his lifts with the large train wheels. He bench pressed with the train wheels so he didn't need a spotter. If he couldn't make a lift, the wheels restricted range of motion, so he would just lower the wheels down until they hit the floor. Paul would rest ten minutes between sets and an hour between exercises so he could use the heaviest weights. A good and humble man who ran a Boy's Town in Georgia.

back then people did not do a lot of bench presses so paul probably did not either yet he had a great bench press

That 6000 lb back lift was possible. The backlift is probably the highest weight a human can possibly lift. The range of motion is tiny and you can use your arms and legs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAYlB8oshYw

One time in Texas, I saw Paul deadlift 630 for a double without a warmup. He just walked over and picked it up. I'll never forget that.
