What makes this video annoying is that in the 80s gary and everybody else were obvessed with corectly pronoucing his name its straydom not strighdom hes annoyed now if he sees this video and he blew his first olympia show by weighing 240 at 6'2" he was skinny and flat compared to the top 10.he like dorian looked like he could have competed at 270 bit came in way below that rolph moeller would had trashed strydom in competition weight cuttimg down from 340 at 6'7"

Gary WAS 1 of my FAVS but he did have a very week back. From tbe FRONT, awesome BUT he wasnt consistent at ALL. He looked hos best the 1st year when he won WWF when he walked out on stage w a hot chic and a cane n hat lol. If he had a great TRAINER would've been a DIFFERENT story. Great 📹

He was and still is a Great Bodybuilder! Too bad the WBF didn't succeed. IFBb could learn a lot… Not to mention having some competition would make it better for the fans! Great clip thx

I think he is a very smart guy, 3 years contract at 400k at that time it was a lot of money enough to invest and retire early.

Why risk your health and not enjoy life when you can.
And honestly true front was the only legitimate challenger to Lee but from the back it was impossible to close the gap and Dorian would have destroyed him from the back.
So, I would say smart move.

Dorian was proposed the same contract when he was approached by Tom Platz but Dorian knew he had a shot at Mr. O so he declined.

I once met Gary Strydom in a gym. He seemed like a nice guy, but a magnetic, charismatic personality- not at all. In fact, he seemed a bit socially awkward.

I do to ow what McMahan was thinking when he tried to make him a big star with the public. Then again, maybe he'll check in here and tell us why he offered Gary a contract

Well the WBF contests were fixed … not really contests… and Vince M. Really was following the Weider model of choosing a good looking white guy to be his poster boy…. and as for the bodybuilding aspect .. you should never be able to win a big contest with a week back .. it is the most complex body part reaching from the butt to the shoulders… if you haven’t developed this body part you are not a champion

I remember when he made his come back in 2006. He looked pretty much as good all those years later.

Gary is one of my all time favs. His conditioning was INSANE in the ‘88 Olympia. Too bad he was extremely nervous.

one of the best ever but lacking in size for the back, otherwise he would have been a mr olimpia.

Best deltoid development I've ever seen. Conditioning and size is on Dorian Yates level. It's shame he didn't stick with it.

Problem is – nobody is gonna match Arnie's chest and arms …

Then Arnie's voice and face was already synonymous to that demographic.

I used to handle informal choreography, it's a long story.
The ULTIMATE WARRIOR should have been billed as the Bruce Lee of beligerent psyco strength in movies

Love your topics Nick (being an Aussie 10 x multiple gym owner since the 70s), but had to respond to your comment re Arnold being 6'2 or there abouts. Have you ever met or stood next to him? Sure, next to his best mate Franco, he may have looked that..l but next to Louie (my height..6 ' 5") ? Just some light hearted fun lol…

Didn't have the back to go with the front. Dorian would've smoked him totally. Shame as his physique was awesome otherwise.
