honestly, how much can you bench press without the gargantuan arch in your back?

My personal opinion on arches in bench is that extreme ones just seem like clear cheating. How is “lifting” heavy weight a whole like 6 inches acceptable?

Hey Matt! Been watching your videos lately! Coming from Beaverton Oregon! I was curious something you didn’t touch on in this video was where to bring the bar down to, it looks like your bringing it below your chest line but I was just curious if you could clear that up for me! My chest is one of my weak spots so any info will help! Thanks man! 💪🏼

Hey Matt, any tips on being able to bench twice a week? I can only bench my regular 50 kg for full reps once a week, if I bench a second time I can barely lift the same weight twice before failure.

Do a little less reps, little less weight changes, and you could have got 165 kg

ok so I have a big question, I have been going to the gym for 2 years and my bench shot up to my body weight of 80kg for 5-8 reps and 4 sets, I did this for weeks, finding it very taxing and difficult and it took me a good few months before I got to 90kg for 3 reps 4 sets and that was maybe 9 months ago and I can't even go to 91kg like my arms give out on the first rep at the bottom of the press and its gotten frustrating, I have tried everything. I got some guy who I see in the gym all the time who is fairly older and well built to watch my form and he said it was good, we got talking and he went through my workout and told me my strength on lifts was very good for my size and weight and he couldn't believe I wasn't at 100kg for at least a single so he spotted me and I just couldn't do it. I tried benching twice a week for months no difference, I then turned my second chest workout into a pause push with like 50-60kg, letting the bar rest on my chest for a good few seconds and managed 8 reps for 5 sets, I included this with flat and inclined Db press where I was on 34kg 3×10 for flat and 32kg for incline, I even added a supine press machine into the second chest day where to my surprise I could manage 120kg for 10×4 all of this and no difference after months, 90kg for 3×4 still seems very hard like last rep is a struggle on every set. The only thing I can think is that I broke my collar bone twice in the same place and now have a very deformed clavicle at the laterally distance end and this aches a lot during my bench and considering I can lower 100kg very comfortably and it doesn't feel heavy but when I hit the lowest point I just can't move the weight it might be this I just dunno its very frustrating

I love this video. So many good things here Matt. It is a very short and concise set of ideas that are very sound so thanks. Just for the sake of fun above and beyond the 99 things you mention here, for some a narrow bench helps particularly if you are a larger person as in above 250lbs (113.6Kg) because the tricep braces against the lats and stabilizes the lift (like you are wearing a slingshot). Also, my experience with more protein and creatine post work out is that it yields greater results than without much effort. I also like close grip bench or pin press to build the triceps for those who have a narrower grip or have trouble finishing the press and although I hate shoulder press I find it also helps in the mid range. But so much truth in your comment, bench is the best exercise for bench (also per Bill  Kazmaier).
As a further reason extra weight makes you bench more is the extra weight is like a belt or brace keeping your in-ards so to speak more tight and braced.  But I agree with your getting cut because at the end of the day less weight is healthier, makes you look better and if you compete in power-lifting you are in a lower weight group.

I’m kind of new to like going heavier and as of rn I can bench 1 over plate on each side and under 2 I’m hoping I can get to above 2 one day and this was a very helpful video 🙂

When going for power The bench is Mostly a triceps and shoulder exercise! So widest grip possible takes those muscles out of play and puts you at risk of injury . So no definitely not the smart idea 💡.
