What would make this movie for me is if they made it factually correct and no b.s. Chances are that's not gonna happen though 'cause who's to say what's true fact and what isn't? Still gonna watch it…probably a buncha times.

They actually got some decently big names for the movie( superman actor from supergirl, Colton Haynes from arrow, Victoria Justice )
Also this is the weider story so it’s not focused mainly on the bodybuilders lives so they probably won’t have that many lines
And even if they did there’s not a single big name Hollywood actor that could achieve the looks of Arnold, Sergio snr etc or VERY few so actual bodybuilders are really the only realistic options for the roles
Pumping iron didn’t exactly have a huge budget either. Even for that time 1 million was not on par with huge blockbusters of the 70’s.
And this is a biopic so it doesn’t need have a blockbuster budget
Let’s hope this movie doesn’t suck

I think the movie is a cool idea. Not like any actors can be Arnold or Sergio size. Great casting choices if they are trained up a little.

I kinda agree but also kinda not. I think they picked bodybuilders because the want to represent.
My idea is that it's more important to the Weider corp that those athletes portrayed actually look like the real deal.
Of course they wouldn't have had the budget to do a big movie but since you won't even find any actors who not only resemble a certain character in the facial region but also with their physique or are determined to put in years of work to look like an actual golden era bodybuilder just for a small role in a tiny movie ANYWAY 🙂 …
…they rather picked some of their own.
Because it's a movie about bodybuilding by THE bodybuilding company.
There was never an option to have both, the looks AND the acting,
so they chose the looks over acting, because it's cheaper and makes more sense in this context,
rather than picking an actor who can act the part and maybe even sounds exactly like Frank Zan for example but has the physique of a random jogger. That would throw off most, if not all of the bodybuilding fans watching this movie.
The producers know their target audience, they guesstimated how much revenue to expect and that's how they came up with their budget.

Yeah, the budget doesn't help.
And I agree, it will probably suck as a movie.
Still looking forward to it, since it's so niche. Because if you think about it, if they really made this a Hollywood movie, it would starr Ben Affleck as whatever, as long as he's in there. And Tyrese as Sergio Olivia.
I don't even want to go on.
It would suck even worse is what I'm saying.

I think I made my point.

I spent two days this week volunteering as an extra for this film and had quite a hell of a time for sure; very much an insightful experience into the process in which films are made.

As for the budget, you can tell it's not going to be a HUGE movie, but they are using top notch equipment and very professional talents behind the camera who are damn good at what they do, so they are making every dollar count and will use some creative tricks to making the movie appear to be on a grander scale than it really is.

As for the bodybuilders, Calum looked much more like Arnold in shape and proportions (though his facial structure is just a bit off) during the finale scene shoot, and his posing and tempo of movement are practically flawless. Sergio Jr (who, between takes, is a glorious combination of ham and cheese that he practically makes a whole sandwich. Very eccentric and entertaining fellow) definitely makes an effort to pay tribute to his father and did a very good job at pulling it off; seeing him do some of the more iconic poses live and in person was very satisfying, as I always admired his father when I was a kid and never got to truly appreciate the golden age of bodybuilding outside of Weider's book from 1980. There are other scenes showcasing competitions from the 40s to the 70s, and each bodybuilder actor was chosen for their physiques and training styles representative of those eras, so they are clearly showing that they've done their homework in this regard.

The lead actors and director were a joy to work with and it was fascinating watching them work together in preparation for their scenes. Gallo especially was a very friendly and extremely passionate filmmaker, and I certainly could see him being a truly great director if given the perfect movie to really flex his talents with.

Overall, I'm excited for this film, and can't wait to see it released.

Shouldn't Frank be played by a white instead of Indian guy? They look nothing alike in structure and appearance.
Sadik at his physique days should have played him.

Making bodybuilding movies like this doesnt do justice to the some of the legends being portrayed. What made them a class apart was their mentality, hardwork, well roundedness and most important of all, genetics. Guys like calum, however being big and aesthetically pleasing, cannot compete with the likes of arnold. Genetics can never be replicated when it comes to bodybuilding, no matter how hard anyone tries. Just how calum and arnold have different vascularity(arnold being more pleasing ofc), unless they use some soecial effects.
Just my thought

1:39 Seems like some weird thing is happening either genetically, or with modern training styles and techniques, or with modern drugs, and LATS! None of the modern guys seem to be able to get the low-lat insertions and a V-taper that starts at the obliques like the old-school guys did. Weird… "V" vs "Y"
