How to GO LOW (Squat Deeper Instantly!) – ATHLEAN-X™

by YouTube Team

Get more out of every workout with ATHLEAN-X

You know that in order to get better results from your squats that you need to squat low, or at least deeper than you squat right now. We always think that we don’t squat low enough. Sometimes this happens because we don’t have adequate quad strength and sometimes it is due to flexibility or mobility issues. In this video, I show you how to squat lower and how to go deeper into your squats with two quick tips.

In fact, you can incorporate the squat tips I show you here into your very next leg workout.

The proper squat depth is needed to help put the focus on the legs and not on the back or knees. Learning how to squat deeper though is about much more than technique and strength (as you’ll see in this video). The squat exercise requires equal parts mobility, flexibility and strength. One without the other is not enough to execute proper squat form let alone to start banging out ass to grass squats.

People will often ask, how low should I squat. My answer is always, as low as you can squat without compromising your other joints. Well, now you should be able to start to do low squats and improve your squat with just a little bit of practice.

For a complete program that will help you get stronger legs while learning how to squat deeper or get lower on the exercise (along with many other elite athlete training tips), then be sure to head to and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System.

Is the mobility exercises with the band a permanent solution or does it only work for to squat that comes after. Can your bones change position over time, so you can eventually do it without that mobility exercise?

Always with this "you're doing it wrong." I can't stand this guy's videos. Why can't he just show something and not create this fear and whatnot?

I would like a video on bar position for squats with consideration to torso vs leg length, tall vs short, high bar vs low bar. Thanks!

Thanks Jeff,

Since I was a child I was had a problem with proper walking, I always walked/runned on my toes. My parents were always correcting me on this. Now I'm 24 years old, my calves have fully been grown short in tightness. I have never been able to bend my feet like others and I know nobody with this issue. Also internet didn't helped me much and the family doctor also couldn't help.
I started following you're channel since working out again. Love the channel and because you are also a physical therapist I know you would have a video for my problem! So I searched on your channel and found this video!

I wonder if I will ever be able to proper squat by going deep without a plate below my feet, but I will try these tips!

Tried to do this and I can't. My ankles are so stiff I can't reach the weights at the bottom with my hands.

Holding the bar in partial squat and then turning to your right could set you up for injury. Beware of that dance. (The twist)

I can't go far down, but it's my hips that won't go down. I have plenty more ankle dorsalflexion than I need to go down deeper, but the hips won't go down.

I couldn’t squat at all without my heels coming off the ground. Doing the mobility drill with a rubber band before the exercise instantly fixed it! My feet are planted and knees don’t go far beyond the toes. Can’t believe it worked so well.
