I've been trying this technique of breathing heavier when I really need it at the end of some of my sets and IT REALLY DOES WORK. I've been able to get through more heavier weights because of this. I bet some of it is psychological like I've got Dumbo's feather and know how to fly now but for sure it is also physical like going in to a battle needing that air, etc. THANK YOU SCOTT! This post is gonna help me pack on the meat man!

Care to elaborate as to why?

plateus are good, its a head up that you have to kick it up a notch or add more variety, try different exercises, increase the intensity, etc…

hah yeah, grunting really does help, specially when training to failure, to me its psychological, besides when you are grunting and breathing hard you really engage your abs, so it gives me you a boost of power to finish that last rep, who cares what anyone else in the gym thinks, just do your thing people

You made an old man noise at the end when you got up. You are way too young and healthy for that. (j/k) 😉

@ScottHermanFitness No, Mark Rippetoe is correct. The principle he uses in advising lifters to hold their breath on heavy lifts is the same principle used by Karate instructors to tell their students to shout as they strike; namely to intensify the body as a working unit through the tightening of the core. Powerlifters sometimes miss reps during heavy squats precisely because they didn't hold a big enough breath.

@ScottHermanFitness And I'd still say that the manner in which you recommend people to breathe is correct for the same reasons, since you don't breathe out smoothly. You either grunt or you do that little exhaling thing that you demonstrated in this video, which is different than soft and casual breathing. The point is that exertion of effort you give with it.

Do Rippetoe's way if you want to increase your blood pressure, not your muscles…

@ZachRduo

Yeah because going from a 55kg x5 squat to a 130kg x1 squat in 3 months will not make you bigger…

@WaaahWah You are supposed to exhale as you exert force. Whatever that guy said is wrong.

This is the most devious (coniving) exercise video I have ever seen. I am sure almost everyone is very disappointed with this. You should change the initial video title or change the video.
