what I find when I do dumbbell rows I have the dumbbell level with my chest then pulling the dumbbell towards my hip which I feel a stretch from the top of my shoulder all the way down to the bottom of the lats
is this the same sort of exercise what you're describing
I use rows primarily for upper back/trap training. I find that rows aren't as good to train the lats as a vertical movement like pull ups so I focus on retracting and stretching my scapula on db/bb rows to target my traps with a secondary focus on lats. To each their own. Heavy deadlifts/bb/db rows/pull ups are all you need for a great back. Thanks Omar

Best way to stay locked and focus on your back and lats in a row is to do everything he says here but to also pay close attention to where your elbow is and how it moves. Obviously never flare it, but also try to keep it at the exact same level and pull it straight back while squeezing the lat
Omar, my back is getting stronger but not growing. I never get doms in my back so I'm not sure I'm hitting it right even though I feel the contraction. Any tips?
