It helps but doesn't work if the other person grabs or hits your balls or eyes doesn't work.
A sport only works on sports fields and with some luck on street.

Of course jiu jitsu works it’s like asking if a rear naked choke works

Wasn't it a much better solution to just go for the control of the other hand and go for underhook than to wait for someone to strike you hoping he won't damage you?

lauphable .. in a street fight if someone grab you, you are already dead.,. here they had plenty of time to discuss crap
it is like the court for the plane crash landed in the river in NY… lets get serious.. street fight?.. a real fight has hits
show us what if.. you are savered punched in the head..

Pablo Aquila October 29, 2021 - 3:44 pm

The first example might not work if the guy will punch not in the face but liver and you're done, should be attentive to both levels

been doing boxing, karate, muay thai and bjj. Bjj is by far the most dominating combat sport with wrestling. If you have basic muay thai/boxing skills, but a very strong bjj, you are unstoppable.

Having 16+ yrs in martial arts, and my time in the ARMY, let alone a couple security jobs in bars… That first technique with the wrist takedown, is absolute trash. I mean no offense, but in a crowded, dynamic environment, it makes sense to parry, or glance the grab attempt, because uh distance and movement are a thing. A drunk ass trying to grab for an index point, just don't give him that range feeler. And for the love of god, don't try that ridiculous escape from the grab, stepping to the inside. You don't know if the other hit is a knife or his buddy? buddies are going to jump in or have worse. Great way to get stabbed, jumped or worse.

You may have gotten bruised physically, but you let off many verbal insults that will leave him scarred for years! "BJJ!?!?! YOURE FROM BIRMINGHAM!!!!" LOL

Jui jitsu is a great self defense. But even great fighters admit that running away and screaming like a girl is often far greater

I’ve been practicing martial arts for a long time. I have done some bjj and plan on training in it more. It is a very valuable skill set to have!
However- it doesn’t seem sound thinking to go to the ground unless::
1) you get taken to the ground then unless you can end it very quickly- better to get back on one’s feet ASAP.

2) you absolutely know that it is just you and him. No possibility of friends showing up.

3) It’s your best chance for success. Guy is bigger/stronger and getting him on the ground will be your only shot.

4) you are alone. If you have wife, kids, grandma etc may not be safe for them if you room the ground. Can’t protect them.

A Navy SEAL is a frog man and great in the water but would rather (I’m safely assuming ) go hand to hand on dry land. Being able to swim and being good at ground fight seem very similar. In this analysis

**An additional consideration is weapons. Unless you have the opportunity to pat the guy down in advance (knife, shank, pen, etc) it could end badly. You could submit him at expense of kidney…….or worse.
Does this mean all roses on your feet? Nope! But you can use your environment, doors cars , improvised weapons (beer glass, pool cue etc) on your feet and if your alone and tactically sound- run. 😎

I’m a little late but a super important lesson I learned which may sound like common sense but some people need to remember it mainly because of Hollywood. Don’t fight them if they have a knife or a gun just walk or run away if you can. It’s not worth it.

Any style of JuJutsu (Jiu-Jitsu) can work. Japanese, Brazilian or whatever. It all depends on how you use is. Now going back to the 17th century of Japan, JuJutsu was made for warfare. Now it has much more than grappling. But it was effective and still is. Now yes, all martial arts evolve. No argument there. But this principle they showed is and can be applied in Judo, Japanese JuJutsu and so on. This is not solely a BJJ concept.

personally I would not go for a wrist lock from a standing position. It's very hard getting a hold of someone's wrist in a street fight. I'd rather break the grip and close the distance.

Does BJJ work in real street fights? A better question to ask is, would you hug someone who has … a car key to stab your neck? 😆

The best style to use in street fight is probably Boxing and/or Muay thai. Strike at the weak points ie eyes or balls then run away like hell. In fact, if you're fighting a nobody at all, a typical Muay thai kick will already break the dudes leg, giving you a chance to run away. Never ever try to hug a stranger in street fights. Biting is allowed. Headbutt is allowed. Any objects around all allowed. Thus, only striking arts can help you in real street fights and grapping arts only get you killed.

I remember my first jiu jitsu class thinking it was similar to kickboxing where you can kinda be a natural and being strong will help, oh how I was wrong, same thing happened when I went into wrestling. Grappling will always have a special place in my life with the respect I have for it and the people who do it.
