I'm a downhill MTBer, i ride a proper bike and know that you could fit all that stuff to your bike with the use of just one spanner instead of paying for a bike shop to put your bike together 😉 and you're meant to ride in the same direction as the traffic haha. and you should ride on the road more, even though road wheels are build to take abuse, you'll be able to get a lot better feedback from the tires if you ride on the road where it's smooth. still, good vid, keep riding 🙂

Unless laws differ in your state, it's illegal and dangerous to bike against the traffic and on sidewalks. When you bike, you ride as if you are a car and WITH the traffic. Pedestrians on the other hand are suppose to walk against so you can see traffic coming.

Wow, You are dangerous on the road, And with headphones. lol. I'm glad you are riding with others who can keep you in line, I LOVE that bike. What a beauty it is. BTW. The others on here are right, riding against traffic is a total NO NO, Seriously, it totally confuses a driver, esp if it's someone who is not that good at driving.

Scott, first you're awesome. Second, consider hiring a biking coach for the weekend to teach tricks, technique, and safety. It wouldn't be that much, and could really make a difference in getting you in one piece to SF, plus you'll learn all kinds of cool things about gearing, slowing without braking, balance, hill-climbing and so on. The riders in CA are advantaged in that they have training leaders, and it helps new riders. I don't want to see you hurt. Ask the bike shop for a recommendation.

@nick121690 riding against the flow of traffic is significantly increases the risk of accidents. common misconception

@TheDarkKnightFalls thats the way i was always taught. the reason you ride against traffic is so you can see the traffic coming at you and they see you much better. the traffic coming from the rear is on the other side of the road so there is little to no risk of them hitting you. also you can make eye contact much better riding against traffic

Reply
Gabriel Sims April 19, 2011 - 11:38 pm

@nick121690 yea, I was taught this as a child too, but have had it lectured out of me by a few pro cyclists so I looked it up and it turns out that it is the much more dangerous way! go figure, but I guess it does make sense that facing cars head on can be dangerous I guess

It's much safer to ride your bike on the street like jumpingforgold1 said because people don't expect people to be shooting at 15-20mph down a sidewalk. Also, I noticed you had an iPod. Using ear buds while biking is dangerous because you can't hear the traffic around you. I just bought a helmet-mounted 'Tunebug Vibe' (just google it) to turn my helmet into a speaker. It connects via bluetooth to my phone's music and was a great investment. So glad you started cycling. Keep the vids coming.
