That's movie 101. Every movie has to have an antagonist

Strongly disliked this film from a bodybuilding fan’s perspective. I found it disrespectful to Sergio Oliva, Bob Hoffman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Portrayed Arnold as a dumbass who needed Weider to be a success, rather than the shrewd and charismatic businessman and athlete he was. This film was a hagiography to Weider instead of a love letter to the earlier years of professional bodybuilding that it could have been.

Critic scores are worthless. The fan 95% means it's worth checking out

I saw it a few months ago. It was okay, I felt they played it safe. I was waiting for the film to be more if a Raging Bull style to the film. They didn't but if they had the film would have been more gritty and would have gained a bigger audience.

What??? "Bill Hawk is a fictional character in this movie", and yet the film is suppose to be a docudrama about Joe Weider's true life story—plus a bit of his brother's career. Of course, the fictional antagonist is anti-semitic. Of course! Rich and powerful Zionist jews are always victims. And people buy this stuff? His contests were rigged to the absolute max.

And wait! Do you know how Joe and Ben Weider got their careers started in NY?

I know this as a fact from a former director of Unipro, Inc. for whom I worked back In the 1980's. Kiddy porn mostly, plus other kinds of pornography. This guy and his brother deserve little to no respect. Their underhandedness in business is exactly why Rory Niedermayer never signed a contract with the weiders. Rory had and still has too much class.

May contain spoilers in this comment.

I personally think that cinematographically the movie was bad. I don't know much about bodybuilding but normally when you review a movie you review the movie and not the bodybuilders that appears in the movie. (It can actually be a good way of conversation, talking about bodybuilding is quite interesting, I've learned things I didn't know) The movie did not had bad reviews because of the bodybuilding story or cast and all, it's most of the time the way the movie director make the movie or build the story. Story telling is really important in cinema. For exemple, the thing that doesn't stand well is that the movie is about the two brothers (literally, at the beginning he is asked about his work with his brother who is now dead and I thought for a long moment that we would learn more about his brother – played by Aneurin Barnard.) but we only focus on Joe so all the credibility about family work is like thrown at the window. We do see moments where the two of them collaborate and stand next to each other but there's not much more and that's quite sad. Ben is like hidden in the shadow while his brother is almost caring about him only when he goes to war and when his dead (and also a little bit when they're young) Anyways, I can go on but I don't want to bother more with my stupid comment that might have haters throwing at me.

If any one read the old strength magazines he will realize how they speak negative about bodybuilders because they are not strong but they have recpect for bodybuilders like reg park and Jhon grimik because they are strong I think the bodybuilding world needed people like vince gironda and Joe to save bodybuilding… Sorry my English not good.

I love Arnie and thought CVM did a really great job all round. I agree with your rating of 8/10. Your review is spot on and as you say really requires an understanding and experience of the bodybuilding world to appreciate this biographical story.

They should have over-dubbed a voice actor for Arnold. That was a horrible Arnold impersonation.

I really enjoyed the movie. I noticed most of the comments most talking about Arnold. Hilarious! The story line is about Joe who had a vision of the perfect body, he was obsessed in finding. Which by all accounts took almost ( won his competition in 1937 and found Arnold in the mid 1960’s) 30 years. Joe had an unwavering determination in his beliefs, he was relentless. Without his strength in pushing year after year. Everyone gives up so easy when times get hard. Body building could have been delayed by decades. Thanks Joe!

Good movie, but wish it was 20 minutes longer and showed the relationship with the athletes through the early 2000’s

Bill Hawk could also be part Arthur Jones. Sergio actually worked for him at one point. Arthur Jones was never into contest promotions or publishing, but his equipment and training methods were 180 degrees from Weider and Arthur Jones was a serious threat to the “Weider” way of training.

I’ve also dropped a review of bigger on my channel: Calum’s screen time has been reduced a lot comparing with the original script due, probably, to the poor skill of Calum…if you watch unbroken you can see how many troubles Calum had to nail the part the right way

Did it show Arnold beating Sergio the first time they met? If so, that sucks. If not, OK.
