BENCH: How To PICK UP & DUMP Heavy Dumbbells Safely! | NO SHOULDER PAIN! – ScottHermanFitness

Depressing your shoulder blades is crucial when benching if you want to avoid a serious shoulder injury. In fact, this is the most common mistake I see in the gym as people begin to bench heavier dumbbells. You don’t see it as much with the barbell because you can slide into position before even unracking the weight.

But if you take the time to learn my easy trick for getting into the right position to bench heavy dumbbells, shoulder packing will never be an issue again. Just make sure you practice with LIGHT WEIGHTS first so you don’t end up like the guy on the right side of the thumbnail for this video!

Is it same for incline?

I roll with the weight. I roll down in position. When im done, I bring the knees up and roll up into a standing position, then sit the weight down and reseat.
Dropping heavy weights from a seated position can be just as dangerous.

My dumbbell is not flat sided, it is the adjustable type, and it will bore a hole through my thigh if I do the knee up technique. Any advice?

123lb dumbbells.. beast…i have an adjustable dumbbell set that uses weight plates. id like to be able to put the dumbbells on my knees like that but when i get up there in weight it starts to become painful because the end of the threaded dumbbell handle is blunt , being it is only the 1" diameter handles.

Right picture happened to me today. I finished the set, but the pick up was very embarrassing

I was searching for the answer to this because I was having a tough time yesterday on my own with heavy dumbbells. I watched this video, paused it, and went into the other room and tried it out. I think you may have improved my chest workout and therefore my entire life. Thanks dude.

I know I can lift heavier then I can but my right shoulder can never get this right. And I always end up having to push much harder on my first rep.

Great tips, I also saw a tutorial where the DBs are placed higher on the thighs rather than on the knees and as you go back it seems more secure and the DBs are in immediate lifting position. After completion of set, raise and turn DBs to neutral grip ( as Scott did ) , raise your legs, in bent form, towards DBs, place on upper thighs and sit up.

Hey Scott I've been lifting for about 3 years now and had gotten a shoulder sprain I recently came back and noticed I wasn't as strong on the bench as I used too be. I for the life of me couldn't figure out what was wrong. Your video especially the slide helped me tremendously. I can go through weight like a breeze now. Thank you for everything Scott

Been struggling so much to get heavy weight up, the pushing off with the knees looks like a great idea. Will give this a go when I next train chest for sure, thanks for the video.

What about 90+pound dumbbells? I can bench press them just fine but picking them up seems really dangerous because the sum weight of both dumbbells is more than my own bodyweight. I cannot just lean down and kick them up .. it's not happening. I usually do that as much as I can but I still have to use my shoulders and make a great effort to pick them up. I cannot afford to mis-groove that or let them fall on the floor there. Any tips?
