I’ve had several people comment that Sean Connery won the Mr. Universe competition. I had to see if this was true.

He still had a great physique for his age. Lean and mean.

All those Bond movies From Russia With Love, Indiana Jones, The Hunt For Red October, Thunderball, The Untouchables, Goldfinger "of course" & various other James Bond movies. I'm British & a Bond fan & well fuck me, I never realised that Indiana Jones, The Hunt For Red October & The Untouchables were James Bond movies!
& he was far from being skinny!

"Skinny little guy who shaved down and oiled up. And trained for a couple weeks before the show." lol in other words he doesn't belong there

Lol, he looks way better than all of the guys in that photo. Way more athletic and sexy. But bodybuilding is not about looking naturally athletic… most of the guys there have short and stocky arms…. again.. prefered in bodybuilding

Bodybuilding has evolved a ton in terms of training and nutrition since 1953. They might look like nothing to you but during this period there werent many gyms worldwide nevermind some where close to you. They barely knew anything about how to train or diet properly. Also the population back then was entirely different looking, people were much much thinner. The worlds fattest man at that point in time was maybe 300lbs.

Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Connery was knighted by Elizabeth II at an investiture ceremony at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh on 5 July 2000. Nice video but, if the reason for this video is educational, you should'nt make the mistake of forgetting the prefix Sir before adressing him.

1953 gyms in Edinburgh.. Thin on the ground.
Equipment.. No machines obviously, maybe some loose weight.
Food… Big one dumb ass, since 1940 Britain had food rationing, this didn't end until 1953.
Sean would be allowed 2 Oz of meat a WEEK!
All things considered, I think he looks pretty good.
Seans never claimed to have won Mr universe. He's popular to many because he's always been humble and turned his back on the worst of Hollywood.

Some of those commenting on Connery's supposed lack of size – remember, he has a huge frame and was only 23 – might be forgetting/not have known that, in the UK, food rationing continued well after the end of World War 2, and that meat was rationed until 1954!

Which might have impacted somewhat on the ability of UK-based bodybuilders to put on mass.

Given when he was competing, his age and the size of the frame he had to fill, I think Connery looked pretty good. A pity that he didn't keep it up – he still had a decent frame in the early Bond films, but had lost any definition or muscle development – and in Diamonds are Forever he looked badly out of shape.

I used to go to Arnold Dysons gym. One of then only two gyme in the whole of Liverpool. Any pics in your archives. I never did see what he looked like.
I now live in Perth Weat Australia, slightly more population than Liverpool back then, and there are about 250 gyms here.

Connery was always embarassed by his b.b career, in a snobbish sort of way.

Why didn't he keep exercising to maintain his physique? It would have been awesome if he looked like that as Bond!
