Thank you, Nick for Chuck vid. He is my all time fave. felt heartbroken when I learned about his suicide. not a lot of people nowadays know about Chuck Sipes Although his photos are everywhere on the bodybuilding magazines in the old days.

He has a proper midsection and only a small handful of bodybuilders have this, the rest have drug induced midsections.

"…for that time"
No, it's all very impressive, period. Only e-stating neckbeards think otherwise. A strong man is a strong man, a big man is a big man.

He only had one arm.. impressive for a bodybuilder… "19 1/2 inch arm.."

Once again great vid. He was really into nature, and would sometimes have his wife drop him off in the woods with virtually nothing but a knife and some water and she would pick him up like a week later.

AMAZING genes as I am sure for a long time he was a REAL natural– I never knew he committed suicide though, very hard for some high level athletes to realize they are old men now and have to deal with aging, losing their appearance of youth, etc

Not only looks strong but was strong. Also a really innovative trainer.

I was away from bodybuilding for a while, so I wasn't aware of Chuck's suicide. Very sad, since he was one of my favorites. I remember that when he was in contest prep, he would disappear into the woods with the Boy Scouts he was the "Scout Master" of. He would emerge from the forest in contest condition — probably from living on a 'fish only' diet while camping with the scouts and lots of bodyweight calisthenics.

I remember his daughter doing an interview, where she said that when she dated and her dad told the "young man" when to have his daughter home, she was always there on time or early. I can understand why.

When I was a kid I was a Chuck Sipes fan…His forarms were exceptional.

Reply
David July 10, 2017 - 7:37 am

Talk about a rugged physique! Sipes also did a strongman act ripping license plates, blowing up water bottles, etc. Much more impressive than so many of modern bloated, super pumped up muscle men.

Joe Weider created the IFBB to compete against the traditional AAU bodybuilding contests. In many cases the IFBB Mr. America and Mr. Universe winners outclassed their AAU counterparts. Chuck Sipes was one that comes to mind. Chuck also performed many strongman shows where he bent metal bars and blew up hot water bottles until they burst.

Franco Columbu always says that he was the strongest BB , but I doubt it Chuck was very very strong to , and Sipes even developed an arm wrestling device because Chuck was a very good arm wrestler to!!!

Chuck was a beast, he also did a lot of hand strength demos like breaking jack chain and tearing license plates in half. Nice tribute to one of the legends if iron.

I'm 64 years old and I remember the old muscle magazines. I definitely remember Chuck Sipes. It's nice to know he was a Christian. I've met a lot of old-time BBs. I've met Lou F., Mike K., Bill G., Mike G., Harold P., and a few others. It's really nice of you to educate the ones that don't know these greats…
Thanks.

Chuck Sipes barely defeated Mike Hercules in the Mr Universe in 1960 who came from the island of Trinidad and Tobago as an unknown to compete in that show
