Not all Powerlifters are Fat – Nick’s Strength and Power

by YouTube Team

Roger Estep was arguably one of the most jacked powerlifters of all time. Shattering the “fat powerlifter” stereotype.

You should do a video on that obstacle course racer Hunter Mcyntire. To be as big as he is and still be very good in endurance events is impressive

The fat powerlifter stereotype comes from the emphasis on the heaviest weight classes – which makes some amount of sense, the casual fan is going to be most impressed by the heaviest lifts. Check out Russel Orhii, who won USA raw powerlifting nationals this weekend in the 83kg division. Think that dude could be a bodybuilder?

Could you make a video on why exactly most strongmen are fat? How does being fat help them become stronger?

The most iconic photo of Roger Estep that has been used more than any other is the photo of him looking incredibly jacked about to pull a deadlift. I was waiting to see it in this video but the photo was only shown small on the cover of Powerlifting USA around the 3:00 mark. You definitely should have shown a large version of that photo!

Another powerlifter who was strong as hell and who included some bodybuilding exercises in his routine was Doug Young. Doing a search just now I don't think you've done a video on him yet. Doug had some of the broadest shoulders on the planet and always had to turn sideways when walking through a doorway. A world champion powerlifter, he was an exceptionally good bencher who nearly set the all-time world record (raw of course) although he weighed nearly 100 lbs. less than the record holder. He did of course hold world records in his weight class. Along with his pro football playing brother Bob who came in second in the 1st World's Strongest Man contest, they together set a world record in the two man deadlift with 1400 and something pounds. When Doug competed at 242 he was fairly cut. At 275, he was bigger but smoother. Along with Larry Pacifico and Kaz, Doug was one of the powerlifters I admired most during my early lifting years.

I don’t know if anything has been posted yet but his best lifts at 198lbs were about 780-800 in the squat, 490-500 in the bench, and a 672lb deadlift. Lots of powerlifters were very muscular back then. Look up Jim Cash or Dave Jacoby, both multiple World Champions, for example.

They’re usually fat and sweaty because powerlifting in most cases is the excuse they make when they realize they don’t have it in them to bodybuild

He was my stepfather. I’m not sure if he won awards for bodybuilding, but I could ask my mother. She went to many competitions with him. He was great in his profession and the nicest guy you could ever meet.
He was so proud to have a bodybuilder body with the strength of a powerlifter. He was named the best built man in powerlifting.

Ppl kill me with this steroids bullshit IF YOU DONT PUT IN THAT BRUTAL WORK YOU WILL NOT SEE ANY RESULTS. stop sitting behind a computer acting like you know everything and get your ass in the gym and work for what you want . Everybody isn’t on steroids . You can build strength it just takes time and effort without bullshitn.

I used to work with and workout with Roger. He was my friend. I worked out with Roger in the late 80's to late 90's. He like myself tore his biceps in 89 or so. There was an article in muscle and fitness about Rogers torn biceps. We worked out at Golds Gym in Huntington Beach for around 7 years. In that time I got to meet some of Rogers friends like Arnold and some of the bodybuilders of that period. Like Roger I have been in Radiology my entire life. The last time I saw my friend was in San Francisco at a Society of Nuclear Medicine conference in 2002. He looked pretty much like he does in your pics. Ripped and a big, very kind respectful guy. I was sad to learn of his passing. He passed about the same time my father did. I just started working out again about a month ago after being given a clean bill of health.I am in contact with Sly and others for help on my journey back to getting shredded. Roger did compete with some of my friends in Boston in the late 70's Fred and Billy Stall. They were twins in the power lifting competitions. Fred and Billy were on the heavy side though and that is when I first met Roger. All said, there were many articles in Muscle and Fitness with Roger E's workouts, etc.
