Not only was John Grimek the FIRST ever winner of the Mr. Universe, but he was also the first ever winner of the Mr. America title. As well as Mr. USA and competing for team USA in the Olympics.

I don't know how you manage to find so much interesting info and so many great images every single day. Absolutely top notch quality material Nick! John Grimek was totally amazing for his time and it's great to know that he had a long life. No surprise that the IFBB claimed him that way, but that is something that I did not know they had done. …………………..PEACE!!
Hi Nick. Could you make a video on how bodybuilders used to train back in the days? Like, for instance, back in the 50's/60's, what kind of equipment they used, favourite exercises etc..
Even his name, "John Grimek" sounds tough, rugged & gritty.
please more bodybuilding from the 40' and 50's
Yep this chap rock's,,Olympic lifter and face of York Barbell company,,,,Awesome,,,,,Nick great vid
Yeah, Grimek seemed to be used for just about every bodybuilding ad in the mags at one stage. He was distinctly different from Reeves. Grimek was more barrel-shaped and in a way seemed a more attainable a 'everyman' to young kids looking at the ads.
Grimek was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, the son of Slovak immigrants George and Maria Grimek, peasants from the village Ăšstie nad Oravou in western Slovakia.
So it makes him US- Slovakian BBder 🙂
I grew up near York, PA back in the early-mid 60s. Grimek was a legend then and still is now. very good video- thanks.
There's a story about Grimek that relates about a time some of the Philly Eagles visited the York Barbell Club. John was in his mid seventies, at the time and when the players asked about York training, John proceeded to do a squat workout. He started with 135 for about 25 reps. Went to 225, 315 and 405, decreasing reps as he went. He worked up, I think, to 475 and pumped out a very respectable number of reps, can't recall how many to be honest. But, really! 475 pounds in his mid seventies is incredible. He was a strong man!
john grimek is a legend and one of my all time favourite body builders looks so much better than todays bloated mess monsters..
Very impressed by the knowledge you have about the history of bodybuilding. Great video Nick! keep it up.
The guy had very good lines, unlike the mass monsters of today who look like they were put together with Play-Doh.
Do you think natural / natty ?
Nick's Strength and Health
Did he have pectus excavatum? He had the whole i'm not sure,i think steve reeves has it aswell
Why was his squat higher than his deadlift? I thought that usually only happens in equipped lifting.
During his early years, he HAD to be drug free. Steroids were not invented yet! Later in his career, you can argue that he might have been one of the earliest users or whatever, but early on he could not have been using drugs which did not exist.
Why couldn't they dead-lift 600 pounds back then like they do now?
I didn't realize I was a bodybuilding fan until I started watching this channel.
Grimek was a lot smaller than you said. He was only about 5''6 195-200 lbs. I would put Steve Reeves ahead of Grimek. Reeves simply had a better balanced build at 6'0 and 200-215 lbs. But whatever.
Amazing physique and posing!
John grimek was a good friend of great bodybuilder of India k v Iyer ,who liked him so much, even on his book Surya namaskara ,hehas put photo of grimek in the coverpage.
wow, what a body.
John Grimek (1910-1998) was dubbed "the king of bodybuilders", and without any hesitation the best of his times, but… the first Mr America was Roland Essmaker (1938), the second one Bert Goodrich (1939) and Grimek (1940 and 1941) the third. And the first Mr Universe was Steve Stanko (1947), before Grimek (1948).
Awesome, thank you.
I seem to recall he also did some wrestling and gymnastics and was incredibly strong to an advanced age.
