Dammit he started makin' a splash when he was young! The genetics that he was gifted were phenomenal though. All of the photos are amazing but some of those shots were outstanding. Especially in terms of definition and conditioning overall but his legs were cut up! For when that was and even for now I think the guy was exceptional. Terrific refresher course Nick! ………………….PEACE!!

Nick, I remember seeing him on TV in the early 60's as a Professional Wrestler named "PRINCE POOLE". Don't know how long he did this.
Could have been a very short stint but I'm sure I saw him more than once on televised wrestling. On same tv shows saw a wrestler named Hans Mortier, a fact which might help to locate more info on HAROLD POOLE'S pro wrestling tv appearances.

Extraordinary neck and trap size and consequently, one of the best posers of those muscle groups. (Do you have any Leo Robert and/or Joe Abbenda material?) Thanks.

Everyone then wanted Larry Scott's arms.
I think all the Olympias were in New York then.

Reply
Stephen Ezell May 4, 2018 - 4:23 pm

He was better than Scott, robbed of the title.

Another good clip Nick, keep 'em coming, channel keeps improving. Have you thought of interviewing people, maybe some of the retired old school guys to differentiate yourself from RX and Lui.

In the last 49 yrs there have been 28 black Mr. Olympias. To even mention racism and the Mr. Olympia in the same breath is preposterous. Let's move on.

Harold Poole is a solid yet often forgotten competitor from 50 years ago. He arguably could have won one of those first three Olympias he competed as a runner-up in.

Reply
Anthony Franklin May 5, 2018 - 1:22 am

He should have won some of those titles he came in second. Great video, thanks!

I grew up watching Harold, Sergio, Larry , Arnold, Frank Zane etc etc……that was the epitome of bodybuilding. I admire the work ethic of Dorian but I honestly don’t believe things changed for the better. Physiques aren’t better. Aesthetics DEFINITELY aren’t better. We can argue IF size for the sake of size is an improvement but, bodybuilding is a lost art. It was something mainstream people wanted to look like. Not anymore. And that’s the reason “ classic bodybuilding “ is making a comeback. Screw the big guys that say “they don’t work as hard”. That’s bull.

Looks like a multi racial dude to me. He's definitely shredded. It's crazy how much better the drugs are these days. See, I would take this guy's physique over a giant hulking monster like Ronnie Coleman's any day.

Harold Poole was my first inspiration to workout hard with weights. He was on the cover of Muscle Builder June 1967 and contributed a great article on forearm development. I still have my original copy! Never occurred to me at that time to wonder what race he was. But since some people have commented on it, in the intervening years I have read that his mother was a white German and his father was African-American (a serviceman I believe). Very handsome man as well as an amazing physique. Thanks for the inspiration Harold! R.I.P.

I remember meeting Harold for the first time at 'Zinns' gym in Queens ny. He was a great friendly guy. I later met him again at Mid-City gym around 1990. A lot older, but still huge. His mind was starting to go south. Broke my heart. He wasn't the same after his brother died. Harold was a bouncer at the 'Cheeta' club.
