They asked Lee Priest (Who had trained squats with Platz) and he said the weights were real. He said that many bodybuilders would do twenty rep sets of squats at that time. And he had seen Platz do it in person when training with him.

Ok so that many people helped him get the fake weights in?

Even with those "fake" weights they sure got him pretty damn big. If that's the case I'd use em too.

For all the reasons that Kazmaier cited, it seems to me like he probably faked it, especially considering his theatrical personality. If it was a standard Olympic bar, those were most likely fake weights. For reference on what the bar would look like on a fast rep, ATG, high bar, as he seemingly does it, see Clarence Kennedy squatting similar weight–the bar moves a lot more, and the lifter inevitably has a sort of tensing moment in the squat to get out of the hole. Tom doesn't seem to have a sticking point on those reps where he bends forward a bit to grind it out. It looks like hes squatting around 400 or so. But hey, if it's real, as most people seem to still believe, it's just more icing on his legendary status. This is coming from someone who still draws great inspiration from him and considers him as their favorite squatter.

As Lee priest said.. there is NOTHING fake about Tom Platz. Nothing

No idea if it was real or not, but I would expect the bar to flex a little more at 500. Then again, as smooth as those reps were, there's good reason it was minimized. I lean toward it being legit and just as exceptional a display of strength as his quads were an exceptional display of shredded size.

Tom was one of three of his era to have huge quads, also don't forget "quadziller" who died young in his 20's from drug overdose

I think there is something in this, why would Kaz say that???

Didn't Fred Hatfield use the same barbell and plates? Is Kazmaier accusing them both?

Side note; What kind of badass is banned from the World's Strongest Man contest because his domination is so dreadful that its deemed demoralizing to the other competitors?

I agree with Kaz, the Platz video looks like every rep is the same, it does look odd. BUT, I agree with you Nick, Platz is thee Quadzilla of all time, his form has always been impeccable, if there was anyone able to do this feat of strength it would be Tom Platz.

This is the first time I'm seeing your video on this Nick. Try to get an interview with Kaz for follow up. As a a long time fan of world strongest man I'd love to know more about this.

The weights were real.
Platz has way more class than to pull a Brad Castleberry. Caz is just being a hater.
Also, there were infact other people doing lifts there. Don’t you think all of those guys (spotters included) would have been like “Uumm, what’s up with these fake plates”?
It’s a lame accusation. Tom Platz doesn’t need fake weights. Just look at his legs!!! They don’t call him “The Quadfather” for nothing.

I think the video is real. They don't cut the clip in between the middle take and the end of the bar, and idk how you could fake it back then. I could fake a video like that now with modern tech, but in the early nineties? I don't buy it. Platz ist legit.

Why would Kaz be in the background cheering Platz on during a "fake lift"? I doubt Kaz would've been associated with an event using fake weights.

I can believe this…why not? Last week I squatted eight hundred million pounds…for just three reps though. I'm 3&1/2" tall and weigh 305…don't care if you believe me or not.

I don't think it was faked at all. It was just an easy lift for someone who had the greatest quads the world has ever seen. He could have lifted way more!

The only thing that might point to fake weights is that Tom's facial expression went from starting off with a look of pain and stress to being relaxed and smiling.. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Also that show of exhaustion at the end looked a little fake. Also that bar looks thin. maybe 1 inch thick? Shouldn't it bend more with 500 lbs on it?

If a normal natural guy like me can do 315 for 25 reps I think a roided qaud freak with a sqaut suit can rep over 500 for 23 reps

Tom Platz was more of a squat expert than a bodybuilder, he had bigger legs than any body builder that had ever come before him, and there are dozens of no bullshit bodybuilders like Lee Priest that would all tell you the same thing- nothing was fake about Tom's training. Especially not his squat.

Reply

I don't know. I trained with the shot put Olympic competitor. He would squat up to 300kg's and the barbell would be pretty bent. I don't see any bounce nor significant bending on Tom's barbell. 225kg is still a tremendous weight.

Tejas Lot December 27, 2019 - 4:07 pm

Platz would've made 5 more reps
If he heard it in his prime

Literally….

Kaz was clearly right there, even spotting and touching the bar at the end of Tom's set. If it was fake Kaz would know. What would be Kaz motivation to lie?

I doubt everybody there would participate in a fake event such as this, and why Katz didn't try to prove at the moment if in doubt

I'm proud to say that Tom Platz personally advised me and corrected my squat and gave me advice about hack squats.

His hack squat advice was "Don't do them like I used to. Bad for the knees."

If it's bullshit then Kaz's good friend Fred Hatfield was in on it, and was also using fake weights.

Come on, Kaz, you're better than this.

why didnt bill call the weights fake back then when he was right there behind tom? bills a bullshitter and hes trying to discredit ONE OF THE MOST HONEST AND HARDEST WORKING BODYBUILDERS EVER. i guess bills mind was going at that time and he didnt take his meds that day of the seminar
