Could they be called spotty dogs because the movement of the legs is a bit like how Spotty dog moved in the Woodentops (Watch with Mother), a UK television series for children a long time ago ! I was born in 1958 and I used to watch it every day from 1.45 to 2 pm. You're a little too young to know anything about it !

Just wanted to say that your move with arms and legs moving quickly is called spotty dog because: in the 50's there was a children's TV programme called 'The Wooden Tops' and they had a spotted dog who used to walk just like that!
