Dorian might be the legend but i think he is the one who ignited this bubblegut era of guys trying to get big as possible
I disagree respectfully with Nicks analysis on this video. Shawn Ray definitely had an advantage in symmetry and lines. But Dorian's physique wasn't displeasing in comparison. Dorian's stage presence (seen standing next to Shawn, whom I like too) on top of his grainy conditioning and size development clearly overshadowed Shawn's gifts. Dorian ushered in a new era. I do not think Shawn got robbed, just really bad luck. I do however think that Shawn should have had at least one Olympia win at some point. His posing, aesthetics, balance..etc was good enough. But against a Dorian who was coming in looking the way he did, wasn't going to happen. Lastly, politics always plays a hand in every aspect of human interactions, sure that played a factor as well.
For me Ray was the pinnacle of what BB is supposed to be about, Yates will have near killed himself in training & drugs to achieve what he did but the end result does nothing for me. The two Mr O in question should have gone to Ray, and with the flaws Yates had I wouldn't have given him a podium spot. If Ray had won BB could have returned to it's true roots and the mass monster bubble gut freaks would not be on stage now.
Both of them have commented the other and good to see that over the years the two became friends with Ray staying over at Yates house, respect given from one to the other.
Ray the commentator is usually spot on with a fair valuation of a guys overall physique and their level of professionalism. A lot didn't like his comments about Dallas McCarver when he posed for Jim Manion but he hit the nail on the head with every single comment.
Dorian had some crazy lats that couldn't be matched.

Great calves, hammies, quad sweeps… Vacuum pose, detailed and thick back… Arms, chest… Even great posing…
He definitely deserved to hold the Shadow… As much as I dislike his persona

Shawn's most stand-out attribute was having an entire career of getting soundly beat by better bodybuilders. Dorian = greatest of all time.
How in the Hell do you get a perfect score with Both a Torn Bicep and Tricep…does nobody see the lack of logic there?? Fraudulent Sport..sad
If you showed these photos to random people that kjno nothing about bodybuilding I think they would all pic Shawn every time. To be completely honest, Shawn makes Dorian look like complete and total shit in the RELAXED poses, and really the only pose Dorian dominates him in is front & rear lat spread.. rest are toe to toe

Shawn arguably had a better physique then Dorian that year. But there is only one problem………he was small. Hes giving up 5 or 6 inches in height and about 50 pounds in weight. And the judges during that era favored size greatly. If this show were to be judged today the outcome could have been different.
Shawn Ray should have won 3 of those Olympia's in my opinion.
Shawn never really pushed Dorian. Maybe he defeated Paul Dillet, Nasser el Sonbaty or someone like them but they ain't Dorian. I don't think size means everything, Dorian didn't have only the size advantage, he was better overall and it's a fact

I had always thought the better bodybuilding rivalry of the 90's was Kevin Levrone/Flex Wheeler.
edit: Me personally, I also agree that Shawn should have won the O in '94. And speaking of which, what are some other well know bodybuilding judging controversies (I know this, the 80 and 81 Mr. Olympias were controversial)

With the exception of his 92 and 93 Olympia wins, I though Levrone was better than Dorian and Shawn. Thighs more sweep and striations, better triceps, delts and pecs. Smaller waist

The sad thing about all this is Dorian actually thinks he looked amazing in all his Olympias. I'm a huge Dorian fan but he only looked good in his first three Olympias
