If you A) reduce calories and B) increase your protein, you are going to eat lower carb… you can't eat the recommended 300 g or more of carbs doing this. So if anything below that is "low carb" like many think, then you are eating low carb. Eating plates of pasta, 4-5 sandwiches is why I weighed 295 pounds, low carb made it possible for me to lose 113 pounds since August 2013. I of course ate in calorie deficit and ate lot more protein and exercised 9 of the last 10 months, but not having foods that I over ate all my life and instead foods that kept me full worked for me. There is a difference, carb intense foods have lots of calories without filling you up.

I found low carbing an easy way to restrict calorie intake, as it was a lot harder to get the calories in me with just meat and greens. The fact it killed my appetite off didn't hurt either!

i always tried low carb diets here and there, and it makes me feel like total shit, lack of energy, tired all the time, and feel flat, and have poor workouts in the gym, it totally sucks since i got a lot of fat to lose

All I'll say is that I've been on 1500 calories 'normal diet' for 2 months and lost basically nothing. Switched to very low carb, with 1500 cals still.. and I've lost 9lbs in 3 weeks.

So should someone who works construction and goes to the gym stay away from low card diets

Alan certainly knows his stuff, but he does not fully acknowledge the importance of hormones in performance and well being. As I can not fully elaborate the reasons why in 500 characters or less (or referring largely to heuristics), restricting carbohydrate intake at least until after training can lead to a statistically significant reduction in body fat percentage, whilst maintaining lean muscle mass, I refer you to the research John Keifer (body.io) has stated in his diet protocols. There are some issues with them, however the protocols evolve with the research. If you're interested, take a look and keep an open mind.

Cals and nail your protein BUT also nail the fats. Fats are critical and should not be too low.

You Over looked the most important aspect of low carb diets in my opinion, is the appetite control and craving suppression
, by default you end up eating less calories and you will lose weight. I find it the easiest way for me to cut, and I follow IIFYM 90% of the year. Training volume needs to be majorly cut but keep the intensity as high as you can. I simple have about 100-150carbs the night before lower body days twice a week and am able to maintain my lifts while cutting

This guy clearly knows nothing about low-carb, or more specifically, ketogenic diets.  I train an hour+ 7 days a week (sometimes twice a day) and typically eat less than 30g of carbohydrate each day, and have been eating this way for over 12 weeks. In that time my strength has gone up significantly while I have dropped nearly 25 pounds of what appears to be pure bodyfat.  Not a single calorie was counted and I typically consume more than 70% of all calories as fat (mostly saturated animal fats).

A low carb ketogenic diet is better for fat loss than a low fat diet, given equal calories and protein. Ketosis is lean mass sparing, whilst catabolism is more severe with low fat diets.

There are keto athletes out there, but of course not many since this is a relatively new approach and most athletes started with high carb so it would be undesirable to suffer reduced performance for 6 months just to become keto adapted.

what are good ratio percentages to use to set your macros up for a low carb diet?

honestly here is the truth from experience, i am endomorph extremely, so i am on a low carb diet 5 days a week and weekends i go normal amount. i do cardio 5 days a week and weigh lifting 2 days a week in 5 month i lost 20 kilos, gain muscle and i feel strong and i am lean, i still need to loose another 7 or 9 kilos to be ripped, my legs are strong and my arms as well. doing low carb diet. eating protein on every meal, 3 meals per day. drinking lot of water and not too much fruits, well basically low sugar fruits.

I think low carb is good, they say that your testosterone increases slightly from high fat and you retain more muscle. Change is always good for you anyway, just like in the gym trying new exercises, you figure out new things about yourself and what works for you.

'To clarify, when it comes to weight loss, the only thing that matters are calories in vs calories out. Macro composition does not matter.

With that in mind, relative to a high-carb diet, a low-carb diet has been shown to improve fasting plasma glucose and insulin levels, cholesterol levels, blood triglycerides, preserve muscle mass during weight loss, and other health markers.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Also FAT and PROTEINS provide hunger satiety, not just proteins.

Low carb has worked like gangbusters for me. Felt like shit even on moderate carbs, especially anything bread related. Whole lot of water retention and digestive track misery was what carbs gave me. Carbs also triggered a lot of cravings. Even just eating  a bowl of cereal had me hungry and looking to eat more an hour later.

On a low carb diet my bloodwork is fine, my blood pressure is spot on if not a little lower than average, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've been sick during the last decade.

Low carb eating as a miracle cure or whatever is laughable, like anything it's what your body prefers, and that's a lot of trial and error. Low carb diets are not for everyone, regardless of what the anti-carb zealots say.

What about those who are keto-adapted? The American College of Nutrition have revealed research that. Those on low carb diets have were able to oxidise almost double the fat per minute compared to higher carb diets. No hype here, just science.

Valuable information. Keep your protein high for satiety, thermic effect and muscle sparing. Base your carb intake on your activity level. I'm guessing fats fill whatever's left calorie-wise.
