The Best Back of the Golden Era – Nick’s Strength and Power

by YouTube Team

#SamirBannout
1983 Mr. Olympia Samir Bannout had, in my opinion, the best back of any Mr. Olympia before him.

No its not Samir Banout, The best back still goes to Flex "The Oil" Wheeler. Wheeler's back during his prime is a monster!

Seriously Lou ferrigno in 1975 wasn’t complete to beat Arnold still too young. And retired after it to do tv work. Lou easily could have dominated for next few yrs if he’d stayed, easy beat frank zane. But my other point nick is Lou shape of early 90s my view his best shape would have beat Arnold in his prime???? Wat u think

Thanks for this, I never gave Samir his proper due. He was just that outlier Sandow winner. His back is insane. I remember reading about Mentzer and him doing deadlifts up near 1000 lbs. Makes more sense now. Mentzer had a good back as well.

Nick you are right on the money with Samir's back. Best ever. I still have all my old Muscle and Fitness mags from the late 70' early 80's and his back is awesome. There was a picture of Arnold in a Sports Illustrated magazine from probably 1969 or 70 showing a back pose….I was just a little kid at the time and couldn't believe it. But I have always thought that Samir's back was off the charts. Is there another person in sports where all you have to do is say his first name and you know who he is? Arnold. Maybe Michael with basketball. Love your videos Nick! come them coming.

The best Mr. O back before Bannout had to be Franco, and you only have one shot of Franco in your video. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your take on Samir having the best back, but your argument would be a lot stronger if you'd compared him to Franco rather than Arnold, Oliva and Scott.

Also, there were other bbers in the Golden Era who had better backs than some of the Mr. Os. Robby comes to mind. Padilla.

@2:44 Sergio hated calf workouts.Gaspari bought in the striated back with his roadmap back.Samirs back was thick! He had a fallout with Joe Weider the following year

Good content Nick, totally agree. The guys back in the Golden era were really only concerned with the front shots. It was about chest and arms. Samir represents an evolution in bodybuilding.

I'd say that Franco Columbu's back was better.

James Neff October 31, 2018 - 7:15 pm

Danny Padilla in 81 was good also

Can't argue with you on Samir's back being the best among those in his time period.
Samir should have won more than one Olympia !

All good comments here. Absolutely correct that Samir’s back is top 3 in history and top in golden era. His front poses were just as great. Not sure why he wasn’t crowned more olympias

Hands down the lion of Lebanon had the best back in the Golden Era. His low back is unmatched. The man is a legend through and through, his conditioning at the Olympia was unreal. He deserved many more than one Olympia win but he has had an extremely successful career in BB nonetheless. Easily one of the most underrated Mr. O's. Dude is a champion!
