I first realized this from training clients. If you told them that they were approaching a weight that would be their max, inevitably they would grind or sometimes fail it. If you gave them the same weight and instead told them "this is your last heavy warm up before your max, smash this"…they would destroy the rep.
What you tell yourself is very powerful. Sometimes you gotta be like Goku and train under heavier gravity to get stronger. Ya feel me?
Thanks for the advice Omar! Tomorrow is my PR on the deadlift at 475×4, I'm super excited but I've been in my head about it all day. This video has me feeling confident as hell! I really appreciate your attitude and your content. It's always informative, professional and positive. Keep spreading that message my brotha
So fucking yes bro. I have some sort of mental block with my deadlift where I just cannot break 375 off the damn floor. I've pulled 365 many, many times and increased my 5RM and 3RM but it's like seeing those extra 5's on the end just shuts me down every time. It's just killing my motivation. I fucking know I'm strong enough to pull it but my mind will not let me.
I don't think about the weights.. I focus on things that matter to me so much and gets me anger, something I love and protective about and think about not loosing it.. This might sound weird but I think about my mom.. I always think about that protective sensation and focus on it.. to some of you guys who maybe have kids or so.. imagine that your kids might get taken from you..
Omar. I'm currently dealing with this on my deadlift. 462 doesn't break off the floor. I pulled 440 2 months ago for the first time. now I'm repping 440. but still can't pull 462.
This is the first time I encountered your concept about psyching your self out on youtube. I do the same thing. When I lift a certain weight, I always internalize that it is 20% lighter than it actually is. Works great.
I'm late to this video, but you know what? I never think negatively when it comes to deadlifting, that's the one I'm confident in the weight I'm lifting, back in September my max was 225lbs, which has now shot up to 375lbs for a two rep max, and the one thing that I never thought possible afterwards, I am now able to do 225lbs for 10 reps easily, and even 275lbs, each time I jumped up in weight, I never once thought about how it'll be a drag to get it done, I went in, not so much hyped, but I felt ready, I just kept telling myself "I can do this!" and for 335lbs to 375lbs I may need to use my wrist straps, but I'm definitely working my ass off to get that grip strength better, I never used to be able to lift double overhand grip for 275lbs, hell not even 225lbs, here I was able to do 225lbs x 10 reps, then 275lbs x 4 reps before having to switch to alternate grip for the last 6 reps
