The time under tension is very intresting, have you got more information about that? cause i was of the impression it was very important for gains? (i always linked it to hypertrophy, longer time under tension more muscle damage).
And do the effects of giant sets, supersets, ect,.. have results cause of the damage of the high reps (to maybe failure) and not from time under tension?

I mean…were the subjects doing curls and told to just lift the weight allowed to cheat significantly (and thereby use far more deltoid and lower back)? There is not too many exercises easier to cheat on than free weight curls. Conversely, if the quad group was doing leg extensions, then it's pretty much impossible to cheat. Would help elaborate if he mentioned the specific exercises used in the study.

I think for leg extensions there's really no way to cheat it you have to use your quads whereas you can cheat bicep curls if your not focusing on the mind muscle connection.

If you do heavy chin ups you'll automatically get huge biceps although you can't apply the "mind muscle connection" principle on your biceps while doing heavy chin ups, This means that the load is what matters not the mind muscle connection

do you suggest training 'more like a bodybuilder', or 'more for strength'?? 😉

but bicep curl was with free weights? They can do less wrong in a machine (leg extensions)…

What if one had lost his mind?

Does he beast's through his workout like a goddamned nightmaric, mythical creature from hell itself in order to get some hypertrophy?

As far as biceps group gaining more size, could body English come into play? No real way to “cheat” a leg ext but a curl there is.

I love these science based videos. Brings me back to the days I ran studies in college (i enjoyed school lol). Im happy the mind muscle connection seems to be true as well. Gonna keep an eye out for future studies

I don't understand – even if you don't specifically try to 'feel' your biceps when doing a curl – as long as you complete the curl you HAVE to be working your biceps? What else can be curling the weight – the quads?

Reply
Adam Falzarano February 16, 2018 - 12:36 pm

I wonder how their forms were. Like leg extensions wouldn't matter about form because your in a fixed plane while when bicep curling your form can change quite dramatically. Like the mind muscle group probably had much cleaner from then the other grouo

Be interesting to see to what degree they controlled the other variables…diet of the subjects, starting body weight and composition of the subjects. Etc. The interesting part is what this discussion touched on briefly…are the biceps just inherently imbued with a greater potential for mind muscle connection than the legs because the former is used more deliberately and in a slightly less gross motor fashion? Need another study of other muscle groups to determine any accuracy or working hypotheses to this.

I think it was a mistake to use the quads. Most people sit all day and have overactive quads. They do any lower body exercise and their quads fire. The mind muscle connection is already so strong they don't even need to think about it. No one flexes their biceps when doing things in real life and that would make it easier to get results from once they do focus on flexing. Should test on the hamstrings as most people have weak under active hamstrings. Once people actually focus on squeezing I'm sure would get much better results just like the bicep group did.

Next study, you should school Group A in the muscles of the quads, and tell them how to focus on each muscle group. Group B should be a control of average Joe's.

We use our hands more than our feet, it makes sense there would be better connection in the biceps.
