Great question and good solid answers! Better than the "push at all times till you drop" mentality that so many trainers have….

This may be a question out of the range of the Q&A. If I'm supposed to be eating a certain amount of calories a day, but after exercise I am left with a deficit that leaves me way below that amount of calories for the day – my net calories, am I hindering my weight loss progress? For example, I'm supposed to eat 1400 calories a day, but I burn 400 calories exercising, that's going to leave me with 1100 calories for that day. Should I eat back at least some of my exercise calories?

Wow, that was long, and would probably confuse people who don't track calories lol. If you choose my question, simplify as needed! 🙂

I'm not sure if you can help but I'm going to ask anyway. I have a polar fitness heart rate monitory watch. When I'm working out it recommends that my heart stay in between 130 and 170. Anything over 170 and it nervously beeps at me. It worry's me. If me heart rate is over 170 am I pushing myself to hard. Keep in mind I'm a woman at 5'5'' and I weight 300 pounds.

Any question, I'd really appreciate you answer this one. I weight 300 hundred pounds and I'm bound and determined to lose 100 pounds by this time next year. What tips can you offer me, do you think there are any workouts I should do more than others? If you don't want to do a video about this one it's fine but I would really appreciate you answering it. I've been a big fan of yours for a long time. And no I don't have high blood pressure (120/80 baby) or anything like that I'm just tired of being this weight.

Great answer and I completely agree with practice, practice, practice!!Recently I have been trying to reach the fatigue point in the strength training workouts and it has been challenging! Sometimes when I get to the end of a set and realize I didn't go heavy enough I hit pause and do a few more reps. I think I might have to start keeping notes of what amount I used for each workout so I don't have to guess every time.

Great answer. I have always disliked the notion that you should nearly die in order to get results. That is such a fun killer.

Another nice answer, Jessica. But do you really think that it's necessary to push oneself to the limit to get fit and lose weight? . I feel that it's only competitive athletes that really need to go to the limit.

@jessicasmithtv maybe one thing that hasn't been asked is I read all the time that exercise is supposed to help you feel energized. But with me, after I workout (usually happens with anything moderate and up, 30 minutes or more) I get VERY sleepy. Why does this happen? I feel bad because aren't I supposed to feel energized and ready to take on the world?

Thanks so much for taking the time to give such a detailed explanation. I had not looked at it from the metabolic aspect.

I do find that what you ate the day before and how you slept the night before does make a big difference. If I don't sleep well, I find that I'm more lethargic the next day and don't want to push myself or even work out at my normal "pace". I also find that when doing flexibility routines, I can't balance as well. Right now, I'm battling a slight cold and my ears are clogged. I couldn't do the 30-min pilates with resistance band easily and had to tap the floor the entire time. I'm usually pretty good on my balance, but not today. It really is all about listening to your body. I may not have gotten the "full" benefits of the workout, but I still feel good that I did something. Thanks for the great info, Jessica (as always!)

All the way from New Zealand – again – this is exactly why Jessica Smith TV is my 'go to' online fitness channel. A plain language description of an issue that others often forget to mention or if they do it is glossed over in favour of the "go hard or go home' mantra that has negatively affected the health of many. Well Done Jessica Smith TV. You guys are the best 🙂

So nicely explained.  I guess I am guilty when I strength train of not going to failure…perhaps liek cardio, you don't have to go to failure to maintain, but need to go to failure if you want to increase strength and muscle?  I need to start upping my weights too…and maybe switch to a lighter weight when I start going to failure in order to complete the set.

Hi Jessica, Could you explain what "the burn" means as related to muscle, lactic acid and fluid retention in the muscle?
Thanks so much.
