No disrespect to people who compete but me personally I find they look skinny and malnourished. I find people look best at 10-12% body fat with their tops off and 12-14 with their tops on.
Everyone should know that a lot of it is in the pose and the camera angle. We all post our "best" pics, where we're sucking it in and in a relatively good light. We should also be aware that technique plays a big role in lifting. I've always been fairly muscular just from working manual labor jobs, but couldn't squat or deadlift very well. I could stack cabinets that much larger guys couldn't, though… It's not that I was stronger, necessarily, I just stacked a lot of cabinets, and knew all the "tricks." A lot of it was technique, just like power lifting. Not everyone is willing to put their shoulder against a heavy weight and push even as the skin is breaking or wrap their arms around something and heave while skin tears, so determination plays a role as well. I find heavy weight training to be much less taxing than hard manual labor for 40 hours per week. That said, I'm sure there are pro lifters who walk around just as beat up as guys who perform more traditional hard manual labor for their bread… Jobs that involve bending/stooping are the worst. No human back can maintain a healthy posture after 8 hours or more of that, day after day with no time to recover…
I've always wondered what I'd look like if I actually trained physique. I'm a tall and lean 200 (ish) lbs. with roughly 12 percent body fat. Fat times 15 at most. I do manual labor (concrete and dirt) as my main job and during the winter I help frame and remodel houses. Also work on cars for spare cash. I lug around heavy weight and burn a lot of calories year round so outside of my calesthenics and running coupled with jiu-jitsu and kickboxing a couple (maybe three) times a week it's not even really that necessary for me to work out much. The hardest part is the diet but I've gotten much better at handling it as I've gotten older and realize I don't have the young guy's metabolism I used to.
Even without Photoshop and filters guys should know angles make everything look bigger. How to get 20 inch arms on IG is same way you get a footlong weiner put the camera closer. 😂
