How do you know when to increase dumbbell weight?
It is not improper to hold the dumbbells with your hands facing your leg at the start of the alternating dumbell curl exercise. The upper arm has one bone, the humerus, the forearm has two bones, the ulna and the radius. One of the muscles that lies underneath the biceps brachii is the brachialis muscle which connects to the ulna and along the mid-shaft of the humerus. The biceps itself has two sections or heads, hence the "bi" in biceps, it connects to the radius. On the outside lies the long head and on the inside, the short head. These muscles are responsible for not only bending your arm, but involved in the rotation of the forearm in the clockwise direction. The only pure flexor of the elbow joint is the brachialis. The biceps brachii are responsible for both elbow flexion and forearm supination, or clockwise rotation. Rotating your hand during the exercise is actually the proper and most effective way to do the exercise. Barbell curls would be the choice of exercise to work the frontal muscles of the upper arm in the manner which this guy demonstrates. Why use dumbbells and not take advantage of them by rotating your wrists? There is no real reason to use dumbbells for doing curls in the manner that is demonstrated. Using dumbbells would only serve to take focus from going to absolute failure because you would have to be also focusing too much on keeping the hand facing completely forward. It is much more natural to rotate the wrists while doing, especially, the concentric portion of the exercise. Rotation during the eccentric portion of the exercise it is not AS important, but it would be more efficacious, especially if you are training to increase strength for sports. There are also hammer grip dumbell curls and reverse grip barbell curls that are good upper arm flexor excercises and unique in a kinesiological sense. The alternate dumbell curl using rotation is also a unique exercise in the same sense. The Dumbell curl with a static forward facing grip has the same kinesiology as the barbell curls, yet is less effective as 8 explained before, so why do the exercise in that manner? Just do barbell curls. There are also many other variations on the curl, such as the preacher curl, in which an " ez-curl" bar is generally used to reduce undue stress from the elbow tendons at the extension portion of the movement. Machine curls of all types are also available.

If you have big biceps and a good curl look for competing in 100% raw powerlifting federation they have the curl as a lift
