Protein shakes are best on your workout days, but you wont build impressive muscle without having enough protein everyday, either from your foods or if you cant get enough there, you use your protein supplement for an extra boost. As for when to have it, I'm going to respond to "melv douc" 's comment, so check there
Thats not exactly the best idea. Its best to have you protein shake after your workout because digesting the protein from having it before actually saps energy from your lift seeing as it takes energy to digest. If you're looking for a little boost, its best to go with a high glycemic, simple carb (like a banana, or a plain cereal) before your workout that will give you that boost you are looking for, but will quickly digest, leaving you with the energy to lift instead of digesting.
