Every time I try to work my abs I end up not being able to breathe so I end up finishing way to early to catch my breath.

You probably are stressing your back a little and it isn't used to the activity. modifications should help until your ready.

Wow.. I'm really out of shape. Didn't workout for more than a month because I was hospitalized and I had to study for exams. 😐 I usually can do 4-5 but now I could only do 2 but not continuously.
