The ATHLEAN-X™ Training System:
By far one of the biggest mistakes I see in shoulder training is the way people perform their side lateral raises. In an effort to get bigger shoulders, far too often the “Traps Trap” mistake is committed and shoulder size and growth is held back.
In this video I’m going to show you how you can improve your shoulder training and get bigger shoulders by making one slight adjustment with the way you do your side deltoid raises. It all starts with the traps. The tendency is to swing the weights up to the top of the movement by using NOT just your deltoids but your trapezius muscles as well.
This is fine if you’re trying to build your traps, but it’s going to make your deltoid muscle development suffer, you’ll have smaller shoulders because of it…and you really won’t be hitting your traps all that much either since the weight won’t be heavy enough to make a difference.
Remember, it’s all about HOW you do a shoulder exercise and not just WHAT shoulder exercise you’re doing when you’re trying to get the most out of your shoulder training. With the ATHLEAN-X Training System by Jeff Cavaliere you’ll see how pro athletes train and be trained by a real professional athlete trainer. You’ll get the most out of not only your shoulder workouts but every workout you do from here on in. It’s time to get ATHLEAN!

I really really appreciate that you aren't yelling into the camera.
👍🏻 great
It is no coincidence that the trap is called a trap
Thanks my traps are way too big for the rest of my body. I almost have Kratos traps but small shoulders, I want Henry Cavill shoulders
When you see young Jeff equally hot(maybe hotter) and you wonder how the hell he still maintains!
There's something about trap exercises that contorts the face. I don't get it. It happens to Jeff and it happens to me too. I make faces that are nearly uncontrollable.
Would it be beneficial to do this the wrong way to get bigger traps? My shoulders grow way to easy
Its hard to take the advice considering he has big traps…
So, lean forward about 45 degrees too? I thought you stood tall with a big chest…
My traps are on fire :/

Dat
Really useful content.
Always great advice. I don't mind trap involvement during my side laterals. When I want to focus more on side delts I use lower weights and when I want to hit side delts and traps together I use heavier weight. I've always viewed dumbbell side laterals as a compound movment because I like to lean slightly forward. My go to side laterals hit my side delts, front delts and upper traps all in one and I love that. It's been years since I've shrugged anything.
That was really useful thanks Jeff
8 years later and still looks better then all of us
So, to work the traps I can do the shrugging motiong during the side raise.
Nice alternative for barbell shrugs. Less spinal compression.
God bless
I hate my traps they are always doing the work, I’m hoping this video helps
Watching this after 9years. Jeff is that old..he is truly a legend♥️♥️
YO THIS WAS REALLY HELPFUL BEEN DOING LATERAL RAISES LIKE THIS AND WONDERED WHY MY TRAPS ARE SO BULKY NOW BUT MY DELTS ARE STILL SMALL BIG THANKS 🙏
2021 and it's still a good intro!
Started with a trainer a month ago. I suspect he isn't as professional as he lead me to believe. Everytime we do back or shoulders I can feel my traps involved… Is it my form? They weight is too high? Someone help I dont want to end up having huge traps (I'm a woman)
9 year later 🤘
internal rotation ?
