TikTok’s Toxic Diet Culture Needs to be Stopped – Natacha Océane

by YouTube Team

I’ve been asked to take a look through the diet + weight loss content on TikTok so many times recently. Social media is full of scams and hearsay and I hope this video’s a little reminder to show love to anyone online who might be struggling and point them towards qualified voices: Registered Dietitians and Medical Doctors.

For science-based home and gym workout programmes to build muscle, lose fat, or get athletic, my training + nutrition guides approved by a world-leading nutrition expert behind the British Olympic team are available on www.natachaoceane.com ❤️

My video on the science of why restrictive diets fail:

A few of my favourite papers assessing the impact of undernutrition on health and the effectiveness of a highly restrictive diet on long term weight loss (there are lots more but I am hitting YouTube’s word limit! ☹️)

If you’re interested in the interviews with RDs and MDs about lemon water, ACV, cayenne pepper etc below are some examples (I haven’t found any rigorously conducted and peer reviewed scientific literature into this, which says something already!)

In case it helps, Britain’s NHS shares that 2,223 calories is the average estimated energy requirement for a 13 year old girl. This only increases through adolescence (it’s nearly 2,500 calories for 17 y/o girls) and bear in mind that this is assuming an average level of activity which realistically isn’t going to be that much. Growth and development have significant energy requirements and we shouldn’t just take them as assumed ♥️ I hope it helps, love ya 💛

⚠️ WARNING ⚠️
That lemon, cucumber, ginger mix is NOT FOR EVERYONE. I tried it a few months back and let me tell you, I started feeling extremely DIZZY, couldn't even stand straight or even walk 5 steps in front of me, developed a HUGE HEADACHE and pretty much almost PASSED OUT. Took me drinking lots of water, peeing, sleeping it off and 7hours to pass by to get it out of my system!!!

Came across your channel today, so obviously I'm now watching all of the things. This video is so important. I used to have an eating disorder and a lot of this would've been content I would've looked for, believed, and tried. And totally great point about it on the other side – people think it's an all or nothing with healthy eating, which absolutely isn't the case. Especially as… most of this is not healthy.

There is such a fine line between losing weight the healthy way and eating nutritious foods for your health and an actual eating disorder.
Many people set out to lose weight and then end up developing anorexia.
What sucks too is banning certain content from the internet doesn’t stop people from doing it. It’s the sad truth.

Because we live in such an "immediate" world, we in general have come to expect immediate results – and if we don't get that, then we think that something is wrong with us. For example, there's next day shipping. You can share photos of your vacation in real time. There's news updates, zoom, and all that technology. We have to remember that it's okay if something takes time!

I know I’m late to this video but I just had to pause when you said that most of these TT’s are total bs-based, not science-based. I wish that more people could understand that if there isn’t real science & proper research/literature backing it, it’s truly just bs. Listening to your aging aunt & her just-as-out-of-touch friends on FB or a 14-year-old girl who has no point of reference other than what her just-as-uneducated-peers have said on TT for diet & health advice is just plain irresponsible & completely unwise. Thanks for all you do, I appreciate so much the healthy, attainable tips, guides & info that you provide to us ❤️💙💚

Deleted TikTok earlier this year sometime in August I think, best thing I did.
I used to love it on there but with a severe ED I was sick of the constant triggers, every other video was something that was basically proana bs. Made me so angry and miserable. Top tip to anybody who’s struggling mentally rn, DELETE IT. DELETE TIKTOK

I'm a trans guy so I starve myself because I have a feminine body and now i don't even know what normal eating looks like. I won't recover on my own and no one will help me until I'm too sick.

This video is so motivating and inspiring to me to eat healthy – listing to that feels so much better than seeing content about unhealthy dieting – those just instantly lower my self esteem. I try to always stay in a positive self loving mindest, but it‘s hard when you always see super skinny girls on the Internet, which have a lot of likes and stuff…
btw: I love your outfit
and keep going <3

MyFitnessPal said I needed to eat 1,400 calories a day to lose weight at a “sustainable pace”. It wasn’t sustainable at all. I was 5”5’ at 150 pounds. That huge deficit was too much for me and left me feeling miserable. I have more than doubled my calories since then and added weight training in addition to the low intensity cardio I’ve been doing for years.

I love all of her videos because she always sounds so supportive and friendly and is inspiring a lot of people. She also debugs a lot of myths so thanks for that <3

Thank you for putting out such helpful information that is acty based in science. I am currently studying nutrition and it is amazing how many ridiculous diets you see on social media that are neither effective or healthy. This is very valuable content for everyone, especially young people that are very impressionable. They are the ones that are more vulnerable to falling into these "traps", that will most likely end up hurting them in the long run.

Well I've never got my period, no I'm not underweight. In fact I'm obese. So I'm not really risking much if I was to starve myself…. But I can't because I binge… Alot.
