The body's satellite cells can make muscle in a deficit, but only for a limited time. Surplus and carbs are definitely key.
I try adding 5kg a week to different exercises as long I can complete the sets and reps with proper form to not jump the gun.

My mistakes:
1. Not enough sleep
2. Not enough protein
3. Not tracking progressive overload seriously
4. Not taking vitamins
5. Not doing cardio
6. Over caloric surplus
