Learn More About Salt!

In this article we’re going to be talking about a very controversial topic that no one REALLY stresses the importance of, and that is SALT!

When I was younger I was always told to avoid salt like it was the devil! I would always hear things like salt raises your blood pressure, causes heart disease and obesity, and how we should try to minimize our salt intake as much as possible. In fact, it was so bad that I was always buying foods with as little sodium as possible all the time. It was nuts! But all that changed when read this book written by Dr. James DiNicolantonio, called “The Salt Fix”!

Obviously over the years I had already begun to realize the importance of sodium, I have talked about it in past videos, but reading this book really took my understanding of just how important sodium is to the next level. Honestly, I feel better than ever, my workouts are more intense and because my main goal is to help you guys make gains, I hope you really pay attention to the information in this article, and take what I am about to say to heart.

Salty Folk – This Is Who We Are!
Now, believe it or not, salt is an essential nutrient that our bodies depend on to live and its proper balance is an equilibrium that our bodies strive to return us to, again and again. But over the past century with the obesity epidemic becoming a real threat, ESPECIALLY IN AMERICA, our culture has defied this biological drive telling us to eat less and less salt, and has even labeled salt as an “addiction”.

Now, I’ve heard the general “health” guidelines and I know you have too. We’re supposed to eat low-saturated-fat diets, say no to cigarettes, go for a jog, learn to relax…and dramatically cut down on our daily salt intake! But the reality is that most of us don’t need to eat low-salt diets and in fact, more salt would probably be better for our health!

But where did this notion of “salt is bad” come from then? Well, salt has been taking the fall for another white crystal that when consumed in excess does lead to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and obesity, and it’s called SUGAR! So the question now becomes, based on your current diet, should you be cutting down or adding MORE salt? Let’s find out.

Why Salt Is NOT Bad For Your Health
For more than forty years, our doctors, the government, and the nation’s leading health associations have told us that consuming salt increases blood pressure and thus causes chronic high blood pressure.

But here’s the truth: there was never any sound scientific evidence to support that idea. In fact, the majority of population is not sensitive to the blood pressure-raising effects of salt. In fact, even for those that are, reducing salt intake to around 2,300 milligrams per day, may only lower their blood pressure by a mere 0.8 – 0.2 mmHg (millimeters of mercury), and if you take a look at how blood pressure is measured, this is totally insignificant.

Think about it – we cry salt, we sweat salt and our cells in our bodies are bathed in salty fluids. So, without salt we would not be able to survive. Simply put, if you eliminated salt from your diet you would die and if you’re experiencing chronic issues with your body that you just can’t quite figure out when it comes to energy and recovery, not enough salt intake is probably why. So perhaps we should stop worrying about getting too much salt and start worrying about not getting enough!

Who Is The Actual Culprit?
But if salt is not the reason behind the rise in obesity, what is? Well, there’s no denying that we’re in the midst of a nationwide obesity epidemic that threatens our collective health, well-being and longevity. Want some scary numbers? How about 69% of adults in the United States are now overweight or obese. That is INSANE!! How did we come to this? Well, bear with me as I explain the specifics!

It would seem that salt restriction is the actual problem and here is why!

You should specify that added sugar is what’s bad. Fruit and other Whole Foods Higher in sugar like sweet potatoes do NOT affect us negatively like added sugars does, in fact they are incredible for our health.

I randomly tracked my food intake one day in cronometer (eating the same way I do any other day), my sodium intake was like 2,700 and my potassium like 5,200. I’ve heard a 1:1 ratio suggested for sodium and potassium, but my sodium was half my potassium. I’ve been feeling dizzy during my workouts at some points (usually leg days rather than upper body days), this video is making me wonder if lower salt is my issue. I’ll start having like 1/4-1/2 a teaspoon of Himalayan pink salt Preworkout and see if my problems go away.

thailand they consume a massive amount of salt and you rarely see a fat person there that consumes a thai diet.yes the diet is better than western one but salt is used in liberal amounts in cooking.after i read the book the salt fix i added 1/10th teaspoon 0.5ml to my coffees during the day and ive lost fair amount of weight.leg cramps eliminated.if u drink alot of caffeine u probably need salt.i used to struggle to lose weight and now it has lowered naturally with salt.

Dieting is itself a pain in the ass i.e track macros, weighing food, cooking, using less oil, sugar, condiments. On top of that when people say things like "salt is your enemy",salt is poison and all that it just makes the diet boring.

Just remember that majority of hypertension comes from an abundance of glucose in blood stream and not salt. Glucose is also hydrophilic and high blood pressure from bad diets is mostly from a high blood sugar, as the body is naturally very effective at moving salt through the body, but not so much glucose.

Just because you increase salt intake for more muscle and better performance doesnt make it healthy.

1. Salt does lead to high blood pressure. I've experimented with excess salt consumption = bloated face and high blood pressure.
2. Who is the author of the Salt Fix. Who made him the authority on salt vs 100 of scientists who disprove high salt diets with evidence.

Too many fitness types/bodybuilders who think having ripped abs and gaining more muscle is key to health–when it is not.
Doctors, science and evidence is key, not 'bro science.'

Thank you so much for this video, Scott, this is life-changing information, and I really appreciate your positive attitude. You look fantastic: very nice muscles (neck, shoulders, arms). The information you're sharing is blowing my mind because the health culture always told us, "Eat low salt."
Lately, ever since I've started working out more intensively, I've been waking up in the middle of the night with leg cramps, despite taking "Natural Calm" magnesium before bed. I'm getting plenty of magnesium in my diet, but I am female and I squat and deadlift. My deadlift is almost my body weight – which is considered intermediate strength level (as opposed to beginner or advanced). During my workouts, I pour sweat, especially in this hot and humid summer heat (I work out outside). On top of my strength training, I push-mow 1 acre of lawn throughout the week during the summer. Again, I'm pouring sweat. I eat a low carb (and low sodium) diet. I've lost 35 lbs, very slowly, over the past 2.5 years and I'm in the "healthy" range BMI. But my leg cramps!! I just found this video, which made me realize that when I eat miso soup (a high sodium soup), I don't get leg cramps. I think low sodium is my problem. I'm going to experiment and try your saltwater solution before and during my next workouts – and probably just try to add more salt overall to my diet. I don't eat any processed food, and I eat unsalted raw nuts, and little to no added sugar. I feel great and have a lot of energy – actually, the best I've felt in a long time. Thank you, again, for making this video, I appreciate it/you. I'm subscribed and getting all notifications.

Get Himalayan salt and dissolve it in clean water (not tap) and put in enough salt until there is so much it can’t dissolve any further into the solution and mix a teaspoon every day into your water bottle during training. It’s not that strong when diluted and actually tastes nice when working out.

Also salt capsules before training come in handy. I usually take 2 about 30 mins before I train.
