The tip in here sounds super simple but until you experiment with different bar positions, you won't know what is ideal. I had thought my bar position was pretty damn good but shifting it down slightly has made a huge difference.
We can improve our mobility to a certain extent, reduce ankle dorsiflexion demand via squat shoes and work on technical cuing…but sometimes the simplest answer is best. I think everyone can get a strong high bar squat position. Plus it just looks cool.
Are you more about the high bar squat life or low bar?
How do I avoid feeling like my cervical vertebrae are going to implode?
i have the same issue as you as soon as i bump up the weight my hips rise early. i always thought it was my quad weakness but my front squat is almost as high as my high bar backsquat. so now im thinking it might be the mechanics of my body. any other tips that will help keep me and others body more upright coming out of the hole would be appreciated. thanks
I have very long legs and arms. My torso is extremely short. Makes squats intersting.
Used to Lowbar Squat but my Biceps tendon said "no". Doing Highbar for some Weeks now and I am almost as strong as Lowbar.
chris bumstead squat hight bar or low bar?
High bar but a bit lower like you show
High bar all the way
I do high bar, always have. Never done low bar lmao
Slight good morning, break hips back on descent, push through toes and heels. Squat big numbers.
Well said
Thanks for the vid! I think after experimenting, I actually am better with the higher position. Putting the bar lower makes me want to learn forward, so I don't fall back. I think it might be that I've done so many goblet squats before even trying the barbell. Although I will keep experimenting to find the perfect fit!
Been training for a while now. I used to not like lowbar squats because it just does not look as clean as a well executed highbar but lowering it just a tad bit felt INCREDIBLY BETTER. It felt like I could lift 200lbs heavier than my max lol you live and you learn I guess
ill always had my bar on the bottom of the upper traps
god damn, this channel is honestly a wealth of knowledge. every single time i encounter a new issue along this journey, omar already has a video on the exact problem. i owe so much of my progress to this man and his channel. thanks for being one of the few good (non-bullshit) fitness channels out there brotha
Idk what squat I should be doing sos
If you dont have the bar on your forehead you aint highbar squatting
low bar, i see high bar as inefficient front squatting. If low bar moves more weight are you not therefore stronger? Why not just front squat if you want to focus on your quads or you're a weight lifter?
Lu looks jacked enough for me to call wada
never think of your traps! you shelf the bar on your scapulae
This video is true. For me, i found the correct placement of the bar by doing front squats. I noticed i can hit below parallel when doing front squats but not on high bar.
So i compared the distance between my chin to the bar placement when doing front squats and followed the same level at my high bar and that fixed my issue hitting below parallel at high bar.
I believe it's the opposite shorter torso like myself when I have the bar in the middle of my upper traps but I was leaning forward and not as upright and I was ass to grass in between my legs. Coming out of the hole I'd keep going on my toes. Think of a low bar squat as you lower the bar the torso has to lean further to keep the bar over the mid of the foot.
Hey Omar question where should I have my wrist going straight on the bar or bended back?
I tried low bar squat for a couple months and (mainly) went back to high har squat when I realized I was hitting too much of my hamstrings in one day since I do more accessories focused on hamstrings and none for quads. The other reasons are that I like the feel better, it's more comfortable for me even though I'd say I have an average leg to torso ratio.
As for bar placement, I've had it as low as sitting on my scapula spine and as high as thr upper traps, I feel I could do either comfortably.
How is Nathan so strong when he looks sooooo smalll
Going off of your upper traps to your mid traps, there's an actual shelf from your cervical spine that the bar can be supported on, if you have low muscle volume up there that is
Omar-This going to be a short video
The video- 8 minutes
I have the bar as low as possible but really narrow stance😂just feels natural
2:50
Atg with both lol
Been squatting on and off for years, always low bar. I struggled to increase weight and as such wasn’t so into them, preferred variations and even leg press 😱 Made a grip change 4 weeks ago now and naturally fell into a high bar squat. I feel way more comfortable and have increased my squat to from 80KG to 120Kg in 4 weeks. That’s not much I know, but I now see a path to 200KG squat at age 50… I’m 44… squat ass to grass 🤙🏻
Good stuff
I just started high bar squatting but it’s a lot harder to progress on
Wonderful advice on bar placement thank you. Clarence Kennedy is my favorite so I trust him and you
low bar squat team here
Hey Omar nice vid, but quick question. Regarding the ability for the bar to be lower and as a novice, is it ever okay for the bar to actually rest on the shoulders? Not scaps or high on traps, but essentially smushing the traps and sitting nice on the delts.
Had to switch from Low Bar to High Bar as I was over working my wrist and elbow joints. I was doing wide bench with low bar squat which is a taxing mix on your wrist & elbow joints. I love Low Bar as you can squat more but after switching to High Bar, I immediately felt relief on all my joints with the cost of reducing the weight a tad bit. My body is still use to the low bar form so I find it challenging maintaining an upright position but this video may be the solution.
Brooo I just did this like 2 weeks ago I thought I was the only person who did these hybrid squats it has definitely made a huge difference for me as well.💯
Nice graphic at 4:28, where did you steal that? The guy in the picture has WFAC on his shirt, I wonder what that stands for? You're such a chump.
While barefoot I do low bar powerlifter-like squat, with squat shoes I do high bar ass to grass squat. I'm responding good to both those forms of squat 🤷♂️ I do both because they don't really train the same muscle. I feel more my posterior chain while doing low bar squat, and I feel my quads on high bar squats 💪🏻
How can you prevent bruise on bone at base of neck when squatting.
ATG all day
Seems like Rippetoe is advocating a low bar squat.
Wanna lear how to squat? Test yourself every position and the one that fells more comfortable it’s for you.
Very helpful man. Same issue here
High squat but lately as Iv been upping weight progressing it hurts on top of my spine and I go atg. Any tips to fix this. I don’t like low bar
I think for a lot of beginners the problem will be that their physique is not developed enough for the bar to actually rest very low. For me, currently, low bar squat is completely impossible, as there does not seem to be enough traps, rear deltoid, rhomboid thickness to support the bar. Core strength is also a pretty limiting factor in the more forward lean of a low(er) bar squat, I think.
as a short person with long femurs this was very helpful… ty 🙂
Short legged, long torso dude checking in, and even for me, this tip litteraly saved my squat game. Crazy how such a tiny change makes such a massive difference.
